Alright, ya'll might already be doing this but it just occurred to me. I just got an e-mail in my hotmail junk asking me to confirm my hotmail account or it would be suspended. Most likely this is a scammer looking to take over a hotmail account in order to act like the account owner and use it to scam his/her friends and relatives. Well, that got me to thinking. What if you set up an account with a bunch of baiters as friends and relatives and then "confirm" the account and let the scammer take it over. He would then be contacting the baiters and it could be a lot of fun.

I personally don't have the time or desire to do this. I've learned a lot from this site and had some fun but I don't think I have the makeup to be a good baiter. I still try to educate everyone I can about the dangers of these damn scammers.

Yup, that's from a scammer indeed. He will then hack your email and send mails to all contacts he (posing as you) is stuck while on holiday and need to get some money. The modality you described has been done before, and it can be a big blow for him if he gets tons of addy's that all turn out to be baiters. Good luck with it! Very Happy

Good thinking! Yes, it has been tried before, but it shows you're thinking creatively, which is good baiting!

Only downside is that it is actually pretty tough to create a realistic looking box - you need several conversations running over time, or it just looks like a dummy box, easily rumbled and dumped. That said, if anyone wants to have a go at stuffing a box, I can contribute a couple of characters Smile

Hmm, if anyone is trying to set one of these mail account traps up and need a baiter account to have a regular conversation with for a while before using it, I can volunteer one of mine Smile

I've never actually seen one of these mails before though. Do they only target Hotmail accounts?

I think it's common for mailboxes to be set to delete mail that's older than a set period, maybe one or two weeks.

It would be a fun project to set up a faux mailbox with lots of tempting goodies for a Phisher, such as emails to "friends" detailing how nervous the box owner is about an upcoming trip overseas, including hotel details.
