I've got a lad in Nigeria who is hooked. I've sent him an 11 page form to fill in, and instructed him to FAX it. I have a Flextel number, which is configured as "Faxmail"
First he emailed it back to me, but he now understands he needs to FAX it, since I've made it clear that email is not acceptable to the organization that will be purchasing from him.
He has tried to FAX it, and keeps phoning me to confirm whether the FAX has arrived. I am saying the FAX machine is with someone else, so can't answer his questions immediately. That means I waste a lot of his time.
But I'm basically telling him once/day that the FAX has not come through.
He must be getting frustrated that he has now at least twice tried to FAX this, but has failed to do so.
When I look at my Flextel account, the FAX number has never been called.
I've asked him to dial it with a normal phone and listen for a couple of minutes, as I thought that would ascertain if the number is being answered. If its a FAX on the end, I would expect to hear tones. (I'm sure everyong at some point has dialed a FAX instead of a voice telephone. It should be obviousl.
I've never verified the Faxmail service is working, but I'm not going to either, as I don't want to spen my money.
I don't know if he might be using some inernet based FAX system, or if he is going into a store with FAX facilities. I'm a bit puzzled.
In some ways the problem is useful, as it is using him lots of money, and frustrating him. But I'd like to know why I'm not getting the FAXmail.

Flextel probably +4470 or +4487 number, not all overseas phone services can connect to those codes, so the fax bureau's phone provider probably won't connect, lad gets frustrated but explains why you have no faxes an no connection history. |

Thank you.
It seems odder than this. I've asked him to ring the FAX number with a normal phone, not a FAX machine, to try to debug the problem. He says:
"what i hear after waiting for 2 minutes is a tone telling me to
that you are not available to pick the call and i should drop a
message after the beep"
But my Flextel account shows the FAX number has never been dialed. Very odd. |

I'm now some way closer to understanding this. It appears he is ommitting to add the international prefix. But if he does not understand the need to do that, then I can't work out how he can dial my normal Flextel phone number, which he seems to manage OK.
He said he sent someone else to FAX the document. Perhaps they just used the number on it (which has no international code)
Another possibility might be the payphone he uses has a menu where you select the country you are dialing to. In which case he selects England, and it adds the code without him being aware of it.
I don't think my lad is the brightness spark on the planet. |
