For those of you about to freeze, we salute you!
We had some -36 C in the coldest region of the country.
I had been spared of this, living in a warmer part of the country.
We had only -17 C Very Happy

. At night. And -10 in the morning (tested by me myself and I, yours truely, by smoking a cigarette).
In my walk to work I smoke, and me hand freezed while smoking 1 cigarette. This means 7 minutes. And -10.
At -15 I have to switch hands to smoke an entire cigarette.
Tried to smoke with ski gloves and managed to have a cigarette burn on the right hand glove (this happend many years ago, so now I do not wear gloves while smoking) .
I have some "anti-freeze" at home, and I use it daily, in small sips (1 in the morning before I go to work, 1 in the evening when I get home).
Tis some applejack made by me own father, 50% alcohol.

We consider that balmy in Minnesota.

If I remember correctly, that silly man Fahrenheit took a most unscientific approach when he established his scale.
In a very cold day, he concluded -this-is-as-cold-as-it-can-get- and he marked the thermometer with a 0.
Then he took his own temperature (the guy was a bit fevrish that day) and he said -this-is-100-.
I think the Celsius system is more logical. The dude said 0 C is freezing point of water and 100 C boiling point of the mentioned liquid.
So, 0 F=-18 C and 100 F=38 C.

You may remember it correctly, but the way you calculate is is incorrect.
Celsius to Fahrenheit:x 1.8 (or x 9 / 5), + 32 . So -17 C = 1.4 F.
Fahrenheit to Celsius: -32, / 1.8 (or / 9 * 5) ( -4F = -20C)

I think I am getting old... Back then when I was in my teens we had harsher winters, deep snow, ice bridges over the rivers.
I stayed outside almost all day long and was not affected by the cold as I am now.
I had the pockets of my winter jacket filled with big grains of salt, the size of a pea, and sloes. I was munching on salt and sloes constantly.
It seems a high intake of sodium and vitamin C was good for me in winter. Helped me stay outdoors at low temperatures.

And when I got home, took off my boots and placed my frozen feet on the terracotta stove. And ate hot, filling meals.

In the vein of Pastor Frank...

The metric system can be used for good, for instance, using the formula of "double it and add 30" we can take a standard 24 pack of beer ad turn it into 78 metric beers (24*2+30). This is of benefit to those who live in the North Central part of the US Very Happy

Smoking and drinking shut down the blood flow to the extremities. Its not a good thing when its extremely cold. But what do I know? Its the middle of the winter where I am and here I sit with the windows open in a tee shirt and shorts. Yesterday I had to suit up so I had the AC on my entire commute. No point in sweating in the pantyhose. Laughing

The lawn never did go dormant again this year and I really should cut back the roses but they are still blooming.

Oh, I should quit smoking... won't quit booze, though. I have a problem with poor blood circulation since childhood. I always get COLD FEET.

I wore silk pantyhose while in the Army, they were damn warm. If I remember correctly, the brand was "Just My Size", designed for the larger gals.

We usually cut the feet off. Stay away from the "control top" versions, they were too tight in the waist.

Just to let you know pantie hose are Warm and light Weight Know lots of SF and infantry guy that used to wear them now that they have out Silk weights(ninja Suits) though they are the way to go.

Amen SK, I wore them back in the early 80's. Now they have all sorts of "super fabrics" that do essentially the same thing as the pantyhose did back then. ie: wick moisture away and insulate at the same time.

I wear thick pants, cotton longjohns and leather, padded, 30 cm (about 1 foot for Pastor Frank) high military style boots.

KS, you need to ditch those cotton longjohns. Cotton is the "death cloth" in cold temperatures. It keeps moisture on the skin, and cools you down. Get some polypropylene, silk, or merino wool longjohns. And merino wool socks are the warmest thing I've found for your feet, and they don't itch! Smile

I'm looking forward to spring. It was -12F here last night and windy.
