Has anyone actually come to harm because of baiting?

Hi all,

Still working my way through the university and other 419Eater resources (slowly). From the outset, this site advises that baiters do everything possible to protect their identity from lads. I now do although prior to joining I was clearly not as fastidious about it and I admit I took childish pride in telling the lads they had been had. I don't do that either anymore and see dark wisdom is remaining entirely quiet about this with the lads so that they never learn from past mistakes and encounters.

Some bait sites do publish regular accounts of baiters springing the trap on their lads to the delight of admiring readers, one assumes.

The inference of this warning (advice) about protecting your identity seems to be that we might come to harm if lads find out who we are in reality.

Since I have a healthy imagination I'm guessing they might pour molten lead down my throat of eat my pet gerbil or worse ... make me listen to hours and hours of Tiny Tim recordings.

In all seriousness though, has anyone here ever suffered harm as a result of being discovered by lads and if so what were the circumstances? Are they really able to harm us physically or are we talking about e-harm which can sometimes be worse ... identity theft, having kiddy porn put on your system etc?

Nah, no harm.

I just woke up a scammer at 5am using my first free skype call. He sounded like he wanted to hurt me but he can't.

If they knew your address or something sure.. when they apply for a visa, somehow manage to succeed. Pay for a flight to your country, cab to your house, and then do whatever. Then escape the law when you call the cops, somehow manage to get onto a plane and leave. Lads are lazy and unless you REALLY touched a nerve I doubt they would do that if they could.

Although each circumstance is different and I can't promise for them. It's unlikely unless you really hurt them and give them your information.

Thing is too, the time and money it would cost them to get revenge would be more than they would be willing to spend.

Especially as it would waste valuable scamming time.

Actually the biggest danger in my opinion is that if you don't protect your real life information, some lad can use it to fool real victims. This won't result in jail for you, but in some trouble for you, proving that you didn't do it ( depends in what part of the world you live in ) or worse - you'll have to face angry victim, that thinks that you stole his money...

419 scammers are probably the laziest, most cowardly class of criminals in the whole history of the human race.

They try to rob people anonymously without ever leaving their chair. They never need to acquire a weapon, confront any actual victims face to face, carry things, run away, etc, etc. If you think about it, their whole operation is set up to avoid any of the dangerous, difficult, or "hard work" parts of crime. Look at how much whining they do if they just have to fill in a form, or make a sign! If you want to be a criminal, but you're a completely lazy coward, scamming might just be for you.

This is generally not the type of person who has the balls and the get-up-and-go to track down and confront a baiter!

I don't know of any baiters from this site (other than the clumsy Nurse above) coming to any harm baiting, but we are very strict with members safety here, to make sure no harm can come to our members.

But don't imagine we're just fooling around with a bunch of loveable teddy bears, there are some real bastards out there, they're into the whole 'gangsta' thing, carry weapons and are generally arseholes. Nigeria in particular is a major drugs gateway to Europe, had slavery long before Europeans ever got to their country, and this is the backdrop for 419. If the successful scammers are making money, they will recruit lower level people to do the boring bits of the bait (all the script crap), and maybe play the 'banker'/'diplomat' himself to get to the money. Some may also have friends/colleagues in your country/city, and wherver there is big business and guns in a collapsing country and beyond, there can also be unhappy endings.

So the first rule here EVERY TIME is BAIT SAFE - 99.9% of baits will never lead to reprisals, but that last little percentage, if you've baited well, and made a criminal lose (or think he's lost) big money, his posessions, his neighbours, he's not going to give you a big hug when he sees you. Don't have nightmares, just bait safe and it won't happen Smile

These are dangerous criminals. If they did hurt you or those close to you they would not lose sleep over it. In fact they would crow about it. Most of them are a long way away, and they are cowardly and lazy. That means that even if they have friends in your city, you are probably still safe.

However I like to sleep well at night, and that means I don't want to receive an email threatening the lives of myself and my family in graphic detail and have to depend on a lad's laziness for protection. Far better that they are threatening an imaginary person at an imaginary address on a different continent.

There are things they can do to you from the comfort of a cafe in Lagos using only email. A short time ago I checked the username of a new member here. They had used that username exactly once before. A couple of searches later I had their personal email address, their job title and the address of their employer, and an organisation in which they were highly regarded in their free time. A scammer with that sort of information and a big enough grudge could make a good deal of trouble just by telling lies about them to the people in authority over them.

Like NN, it's my bum that suffers most. Not form anything lads have ever done mind. It's from spending too much time sitting on me arse and reading all the naughty things you crazy kids get up too.

The most dangerous thing a lad ever did, was say he would "Mugder" me "for sure", and I'm still waiting years on. So I'll take my chances. Wink

I've sometimes laughed so hard my joints hurt. That's about it.

There is one case where a baiter almost got into trouble for setting up a fake bank (see http://www.occ.treas.gov/ftp/alert/2004-19.txt), but no charges were pressed, and in any case it was the FBI looking for them, not the yahoo boys.

As long as you bait safe (i.e. don't give out any information that has anything in the slightest to do with you, and use IP-free emails like Gmail), then it's basically impossible for a scammer to locate you without police help (as if that's ever going to happen), even if they were to make a serious effort to do it, and virtually no scammers do. Even if they did have an IP, they would still need to court-order your ISP to actually find your location.

Expect to see threats of bodily harm from scammers, none of which will be realised. Some of my lads would threaten to kill me by the end of the week- I used to wait a week before emailing them and asking why I was still alive. Never got a response, sadly.

Well, sometimes my mentees give me a headache, but that's all the baiting-related physical harm I have Laughing

. I did have baiting accounts bombed and closed down, plus some phishing attempts. I also never open any attachments, I know some of them are bugged enough to try and get back. That's why baiting safe aren't just hollow words, I don't even want to imagine if they actually did get into my pc/rl accounts.

Thats where baiting safe becomes real important so they can't find you in RL, but if they do, I certainly don't depend on their laziness for protection.

No matter how nonchalant a baiter may be, or how many machine guns they have in their closet, we err on the side of safety and remain anonymous. It's not also about the risk to ourselves, but the unnecessary risk and harassment to our homes and families.

Plus, its more fun to watch them squirm when you know they can't find a lick of information about you.

that's a wrong way of looking at things.
lads have contacts who are already living in the usa and in europe,
so if they wanted to shake you warmly by the throat, they could probably outsource the job.
that's why nn's advice is spot on - we err on the side of caution when it comes to matters of personal safety.

There is a lot more potential harm in face to face meetings. (Which should be avoided)

In a bait that I participated in a year or so ago that safaried a lad all over the Cameroon, the same lad came equipped with muscle on the second safari to Benin. I have no doubt that if he had caught up to the ghost he was chasing he would have done considerable harm.

Strait baits are pretty safe. The lad's are lazy, but the will work long hours for an easy living.
