This is just out of interest. If you vote NO please explain why. Thanks! Paddy |

Yes, BUT to the official charities like Red Cross or similar organisations. Not through emails. An earthquake there would harm lots of innocent people, who do not deserve to be punished because there are some rotten apples. |

Quite so.
What is Nigeria's history for them to be so prolific in scamming? |

The question needs to be put properly.
Would we send funds to who?
Are you counting people who don't necessarily give to charity anyway?
Does Klaasvaak wear a tulip in his silken hair?

Corruption is a disease. If it's not dealt with, it becomes endemic. In Nigeria's case, it's been around for a long, long time and never been tackled. Once it got a foothold and was allowed to grow, it mushroomed.
As Old Coaster says on the Ethics of Scambaiting page:
Quote: |
In the 18th century, European traders sat in hulks and trading posts at the mouths of the Oil Rivers, Badagry and other sites and were well used to the ridiculous amounts demanded by Nigerian traders for Palm Oil, Ivory and Slaves. Serious negotiation was involved and people like John Holt are on record complaining about the difficulty of dealing with the locals
I grew up in Nigeria long before oil was discovered in the Niger Delta. The culture of Southern Nigeria has always admired those who can make money without working and I have scam letters going back to the 1950's. |
For the record, I do give to charity and gave for the Haiti earthquake. I would also give to a reputable charity if the same occured elsewhere - regardless of how corrupt the system in the country concerned. |

4.8 Billion euro from the Netherlands goes to developing countries each year. This averages between 280 and 300 euros per citizen per year. Not going to donate more.
Quote: |
However, none of those met the UN target of giving at least 0.7 percent of the Gross National Income (GNI) as aid. United States (0.16% of GNI) and Japan (0.17% of GNI) where in fact giving least among the members of DAC. The only countries meeting the targets in 2007 where Norway (0.96% of GNI), Sweden (0.93% of GNI), Luxembourg (0.91% of GNI), the Netherlands and Denmark (both 0.81% of GNI).[5]

Haiti needs my aid money a lot more than Nigeria ever would. I'm hoping that my donations go where they'll do the most good for the most needy. |

I would have to agree with Caligula. There are innocent people who are not lying scum in Nigeria and I would most definitely go through official channels to donate.

Nigeria has some of the nicest people in the world. I had a stab wound sewn up by a Nigerian doctor in some Caribbean port town 20 years ago, and he didn't charge me a penny.
This thread is like asking if we would send money to the US because the US invaded Iraq.
I will send money to any country that gets hit by a zombie infestation, like Nurse Nasty suggested.
IBTL
I refuse to vote, period, unless Ralph Nader was on the poll, as a zombie. |

I'm with Klaasvaak on this.
Enough of my money goes to "charities" (noble or otherwise) without my consent for me to actually WANT to give more. |

I voted the obvious zombies answer. And lets be honest , if zombies were involved , i wouldn't donate. This because i would actually welcome the zombie apocalypse/armageddon. At least i'm trained and ready.
But i wouldn't donate. I have a logic and simple reasoning on this all:
I didn't donate to any charity that goes outside my spectrum of things , i'm not going to start now. There are enough people in Europe who are freezing and starving and need our help.
I understand this is a very cynical reasoning, but i have been building this over time. A good example was around christmass.
We had a "music for life" action that was gathering money to buy maleria nets in somewhere. At the same time we had news comming in about the extreme winter and the homeless shelters being full and forcing to reject people.
I gave money to the homeless. The action managed to get 3 million euro. I have no idea what they are going to do with it. I have no idea if the malaria nets is those people's big concern (i doubt it.).
So yes , i'm a cynic. I'm also a great believer of darwinism and aware that people will die.
I'll stop poluting this topic now. |

Nigeria doesn't need earthquakes, they make their eruptions and are more than capable of effing the country up on their own. Only last week religious violence left a couple of hundred dead. |

It was never in the title. Even hypothetically, the rest of us found the question... odd.
I am a firm believer in answering silly questions with silly answers. If you'd asked if we'd donate money to victims of a devastating tragedy, then the answer (more often than not) would be yes.
Why you'd single out Nigeria... dunno. Also my answer wasn't hypothetical. They really do sit on a tectonic plate, but it's possible they could get hit with a tsunami. Hope that cleared up your confusion.

It was originally "hypothetical poll about Nigeria and earthquakes..." (I have two such topic reply notifications)

I should perhaps have asked "does baiting make you feel less charitable toward Nigerians in general?" Or something like that.
And I'm trying my best to lighten-up. Lost two pounds last week! Paddy |
