He's been approaching a real estate agent I know, looking for a million dollar house, but his emails look really phony. Could end up with a fake check scam. Writes with fairly good English but still...

Looks very suspicious. Does he say what branch of the service he is in? Even if he is a Navy Captain (O-6) his annual income tops out at just under $150k, even with allowances. Unless he has about $200k for a down payment he will be hard pressed to qualify for financing on a $800k home.

Is your friend in an area where the housing market in growing? There aren't many places nowadays where the market would be "appreciating the value of the house in the nearer feature." (So much for his good English. It looks like he got sloppy at the end.)

That phrase alone screams scam to me. Only lads quote money figures like that.

People don't buy houses without looking them over in person. I think this guy wants the info with pictures, so he can run rental scams. He's bolder than most, going for the higher priced homes rather than apartments.

demand a phone number - the country code will tell you where he's calling from.
if you're lucky you'll get a city code as well.

Thanks everybody. Yes, he's a scammer. I baited him from my own email and immediately got back the exact same email from him.

His English is full of miswordings, but it didn't have the glaring stupidities that most lads use, so it seemed to me to be just a little bit above normal ladspeak.

So now what? I think I'll go for personal information first. Anybody else is welcome to step in too. Here's my starter to him:

I was angling to see if he wanted to jump right to an overpayment scam, but not yet, apparently.
