I think that the most interesting part of that story is not that Abacha Jr stashed his money in Swiss accounts but that the banks over there have actually seized some of the assets - not something they normally do.
It's also quite puzzling as to why someone who has apparently stolen hundreds of millions of dollars would only get a suspended jail term instead of a custodial one. Not only that, but they don't release the length of the sentence nor do they name the guy in Monaco who was laundering the cash and who was also convicted.
On the one hand you've got the Swiss banking system looking like they're opening up and sorting out the problem with dirty money and on the other hand, it's business as usual and secrecy still abounds. |
