Merriam-Webster has announced the Word of the Year for 2009. Apparently it's the word that got looked up the most in their online dictionary this year. The Word is:

ADMONISH

So, let's all be good little English-users and admonish a lad or three.

When I saw the title, I was expecting something more exotic. Such as
deipnosophist, pandiculation, or poculiform.

IMO, the most overused "phrase" is as well. The local news readers and weather guesser use it in almost every ad libbed sentence. It makes me want to pour concrete in both of my ears.

I would like to admonish them for the over use of such a trite phrase.

If you don't want to use the over used word, try one of these:
reprove, caution, warn, reprimand, rebuke, reproach, tell off (informal), scold, chide (dated or literary), chew out (US, informal)

I saw AWESOMENESS in print a couple of days ago and wondered what is wrong with just AWE?

"It is what it is" is the phrase that sends me up the wall.

"Awesomeness" and "awe" are not synonomous.

Awe is what you feel when confronted with awesomeness.

Now, to those who say they are "gifting" someone something, or that someone "authored" a book:

Please remember that there are verbs already in the language that cover those terms very nicely. There is no need to make a noun into a verb, and it doesn't sound any more educated, just more pretentious.

there is a new verb in a recent tv advert, where the sexy car buyer says "fact me"

uk politicians seem to be using "resile" lately, but maybe that was last year's fashion

Johnny Howard (our previous PM) used "resile" a lot a few years ago.

The word 'misspoke', is being uh... misspoken by many politicians today. The context in which it was normally used, was something such as: "The actor misspoke his lines". (The actor made a mistake speaking his lines)

Today, however, it means, "I lied and got caught. Wink Smile

@ParaNoid,
Don't admonish me for enlightening Webster's about this, as well. Razz
