"Against this backdrop, my suggestion to you is that I will like you as a foreigner to stand as the next of kin to [email protected] [email protected] so that you will be able to receive his funds.
MODALITIES: I want you to know that I have had everything planned out so that we shall come out successful.
I have an attorney that will prepare the necessary document that will back you up as the next of kin to [email protected] [email protected]"

This is the second letter is this lads particular script, And while I was skimming it
I saw the word MODALITIES, just like that in caps, It made me pause and re-read the sentence,
Then it gave me a giggle as I have only heard the word a handfull of times outside of eater.

Best part about it is that modality is actually a real word.

Quote:
mo·dal·i·ty
n. pl. mo·dal·i·ties
1. The fact, state, or quality of being modal.
2. A tendency to conform to a general pattern or belong to a particular group or category.
3. Logic The classification of propositions on the basis of whether they assert or deny the possibility, impossibility, contingency, or necessity of their content. Also called mode.
4. modalities The ceremonial forms, protocols, or conditions that surround formal agreements or negotiations: "[He] grew so enthusiastic about our prospects that he began to speculate on the modalities of signing" (Henry A. Kissinger).
5. Medicine A therapeutic method or agent, such as surgery, chemotherapy, or electrotherapy, that involves the physical treatment of a disorder.
6. Physiology Any of the various types of sensation, such as vision or hearing.

The lads love using it, so we do too. But as you said, it's not something you're likely to hear in "normal" conversation.

Lads used that term all the time in their e-mails a while ago (some still do) as a means to give the text a more legit appearance, especially coming from a barrister. They used so much that it became part of our vocabulary. Same for 100% risky free! Very Happy

I was not aware we liberated that particular term from the lads.

Lads were very keen on this word up until about a year ago. I rarely see it in relation to 419 any more.

This raises a question I've been curious about since joining 419eater:

I've seen the word "modality" in scam email formats plenty of times, all of this before I ever saw it on 419eater. (Granted, I'm rather new to 419eater, and I've spent quite a bit longer time baiting lads.)

When I saw the word "modality" commonly used on eater, I assumed that it was a word you guys adopted from the lads. Is that true????

Yes, I know it's a real English word. However, it's very awkward and 'ladish' to my ear. So did the eater folks adopt this from the lads, or the lands from the baiters? The cunning linguist in me needs to know!

EDIT:

LOL nevermind, Sir Cumfrance and Hans Moleman answered my question before I asked it! Razz
