Lots of good stuff has been mentioned. Has anyone said Dan Simmons yet? Simply brilliant books...

The late Struan Keith Sutherland's autobiography, 'A Venomous Life' was very interesting.

Anything by Oliver Sacks is good for my soul. I found his autobiography, 'Uncle Tungsten' a fun read.

Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. I read them at 16, and her philosophy of Objectivisim shaped a lot of my thinking at an early age. I never understood the huge conflict people had between her non-religious beliefs and those with religious beliefs.

Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen. A great historical novel set in the depression about a travelling circus and a beloved elephant named Rosie.

Anything by Ann Rule, true crime genre.

I've just received my copy of Terry Pratchetts Unseen Academicals.

My favourite pratchett books:

Jingo, Men at arms, Night Watch, Thief of time and Hogfather

I can add one to the list: The Satanic Verses - Salman Rushdie. Just read it, liked it alot. Not the easiest book, but well worth it. I'm glad I didn't read it in a translated version, but took the english one. It's worth the effort!

Stephen King. The 7 part series of the dark tower is my favourite. I love the way his mind creates another world for the reader to live in for the duration of the book. I particularly like the storyline in the 6th book "Song of Susannah". Stephen King writes of his own RL near fatal car accident making this an integral part of the gunslingers journey to get to the dark tower and how they have to go back to his when, and prevent the accident from happening or they will never exist.

Being the cultured creature that I am, I rarely read fiction.

Republic - Plato.
Mein Kampf - Mr A Hitler.
The Communist Manifesto - Marx and Engels.
