I've got a couple of "I only friended you because you play Mafia Wars" Facebook friends, but I actually don't mind that at all. I'm okay with someone who simply friends me and says, "Hey, sorry for robbing your casinos a dozen times in a row, it was all in good fun, hope you don't think I was picking on you, want to join up?" or someone who is obviously all of thirteen and just friends me out of the blue with a friend request that says, "For Mafia Wars".

And to prove the "guilt" point, one friend of a Facebook friend who guilted me into friending him for Farmville because he had no Farmville friends.

But at least the "I'm playing a game that makes it advantageous to recruit as many other players as possible" approach, that makes sense. More sense than the person who actually was a real-life friend but hasn't said boo to me in 9 years popping up with nothing but "I love your hair.", anyway.

Really? That's the best you can do after about a decade of total silence? That you love my hair? Man, I'm so glad you tracked me down to tell me that...

On the bright side, I guess we're now officially caught up until 2020, at which point I can send her a message back saying "Thanks. I just got it done."

I'm also, funnily enough, friends with a rather (in)famous statue that is within sight of my office. To be honest, it has a more interesting and exciting profile than a good number of the people I went to high school with.

Facebook for me is about 20% fun distractions to partake in with people I see at least semi-regularly in real life and enjoy talking to directly and about 80% psychological case study.

Really? Facebook for me is a way to keep people I don't really want to talk to updated so they can't say they want to catch up.

I had three main reasons for joining. I have a coworker who is industriously looking for a new job "back home" in another state due to family health issues, and I enjoy his company sufficiently that I would like to keep up with him and see how he's doing when/if he leaves.

I wanted an easy way to share pictures of group events when coworkers/friends and I get together and to share pictures with a friend in Denmark. (To clarify, a friend I consider a real life friend despite the fact that we've never met or spoken. We email pretty much daily, though. And you know, actually interact and so forth. Beyond sending digital fish and plants to each other.)

And I like keeping up with the people I already know and love as friends, but only get to dine with or see at meetings every few weeks or get to speak to now and then for a few minutes when they come visiting at church. And maybe doing the occasional silly Superpoke or something to cheer them up and let them know I'm thinking about them if they're into that sort of thing. And there's the odd chat with one of the young'uns on my friends list who lives in another state or a friend from work on the weekend just to vent about work or set up a trip to the movies.

The people who "used to know me" who have come out of the woodwork to friend me don't really seem to need any fending off. Most of them continue to not interact in any personal sort of way.

What pisses me off is when people that I hated in high school try to add me. They probably just want to know if my life turned out shitty. Laughing

I'm laughing at this thread but it is so true. At first I joined Facebook and found a few High School buds. That was nice catching up with them and we had a great time sharing pictures from 'way back then'. However, once my friend list grew here comes all the people I didn't want to meet, specifically old boyfriends. You would think that after all these years they would have forgiven me for dumping them. Laughing

It's like I have to re-live high school and college all over again.

The thing that gets me is Facebook is supposed to be a social networking site but most of the players in these games are simply out to piss as many people off as they possibly can.

Still it's better than watching cable TV.

@Blacksheep: yes, I do. Well, I'm not sure anymore.. It used to be an online game with a chat attached to it with ppl playing from all over the world, but now it's more a chat channel with a game attached to it, which we sometimes play. I'm also known as a Roman emperor there Wink

. I have the chat channel of the game open the very instant I am done reading new posts here on eater, and ti stays open all evening. By now I know people in over 50 countries thanks to it, and I just can't say goodbye to it, even though the game itself is nearly dead..

Mind you its funny to see that Irma wounded Irma in one column and then the same in the other column. And seeing a pic of the Ratboi with a big red cross over it and the word "DEAD" made me smile. He was another fighting on both sides.

When I clicked on the URL to the group it was a dead link off Rovers Sig line.

^ Oh, my bad blacksheep, I should have been more clear. I was responding to the question if any people played any games that aren't on facebook. It's not WoW or Diablo 2 I play, as you noticed. Surprisingly enough you are right about the snot nosed teenagers though Laughing
