This came to my RL account, complete with all the official looking HMRC headers and so on, except for the use of the word 'fiscal' and the slightly awkward grammar, I might have fallen for it.

It's a standard phishing attempt--these aren't usually advance fee, instead they are shooting for identity theft. We don't generally deal with phishing attempts unless they are clearly lad/mailbox based.

I know the IRS has a report address for ones that are sent out in their name--I am assuming HM Revenue would also - check their legit site, and if they have a reporting address, forward this so they can take responsibility for having the site killed.

^^^^^I already did that!^^^^

I'm a bit disappointed though, I could have used 488 quid.

The HMRC site looks ok to me, assuming you changed o to 0 in the link provided. Email sounds totally dodgy. I wonder if they're trying a different angle - you go to the website but don't have sufficient information to log in correctly, so you email them back & they request your details.

I agree most likely identity theft, but a slight chance there's an advance fee instead (Just pay 50 processing fee to clear the refund).

I dunno, I can't respond to it myself, since it's in my RL inbox, but if any of you want to have a bit of fun with it, feel free. However if 488.50 quid end up in your bank account, I will be decidedly miffed. crying
