And help me get started? I have set up an email address on Gmail....so I have that part done.
I'd like to pick one who is looking to scam a rich older lady who is alone, divorced, married with an ailing husband, etc.
How do you go about finding one like that? |

While I am trainer in RL, I am not qualified (are there qualifications?) to mentor. I can, however, give advice!
You don't pick lads, they pick you. It is up to you to convince them of the character. If you want to get scammail sign up with the "shuttle" visit the surplus or seed your addy on various guestbooks. Search guest books for the low down on how to find them.
Read all the stickys, and visit the University. That is how I started. To get a qualified Mentor you must request it in the "help" section of the forums. The help forum is also an invaulable area where technique and tools are displayed and shared by fellow baiters.
I hope I have been of some help. |

Just a suggestion, but....
Refugees and Orphans have always liked my middle-aged female characters. There's a nice fresh one in Surplus, right here:
http://forum.419eater.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=167868
Another orphan-with-millions for you to adopt is here:
http://forum.419eater.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=167909
This Refugee (yes, that's what she'll turn out to be) is looking for love, but she will be just as happy to have a new adoptive mother:

That last Lad is from Cote d'Ivoire, however, the same as the first one, above, so I wouldn't advise writing to both of them (in case they are associates, or even the same person), unless you are open to them about doing so. The middle one is from Senegal.
Just pretend you received those letters (or any other in Surplus) yourself, and answer it as if you did. The Lad will be none the wiser; he will have sent out so many. |

welcome Scambuster.
You can't be mentored by just anyone. It's a highly trained profession, These people have done sociological intensive courses on the subject. You also have to be a recovering multi-personalty disorder responder with all sorts of
controlled side effects it helps if you have advanced schizophrenia, A sort of Me, I, and us complex, can answer to a multitude of names, Write copiousness quantiles of funny believable stories, Can control 50 of so e-mail address all at once. And lastly have a fetish for forms of all sorts, involving the transfer of money..
Which amounts to just about everyone on here.
I feel sure that the power that control this place, will line you up with someone suitably maladjusted, twisted, or bent in a few different directions all at once.. |

Hey, Jack
Like you I've been waiting a while for an 'official' mentor ... in the meantime I've been sort of adopted by another much more experienced baiter, who has been endlessly helpful and supportive and who I (as best I can remember) originally PM'd asking for advice about something or other.
There seems to be a lot of off-forum chatting going on, and I suspect that the reason I haven't been 'sorted' by Miss Cherrie is that she KNOWS I've been taken in hand by the an extremely competent person. So my 2-cents-worth is: pick someone (or a couple of baiters) whose work you admire & start chatting with them. It may never become a formal arrangement, but you'll get some stirling advice and more than a few good laughs.
I've been bowled over by the amount of time and effort the members put into their work, and feel privileged to be a small part of it.

As for time.. i have too much of it and most of the time i am just sitting here watching movies and constantly reading forums/checking to see if any of my lads have emailed me.. ((So far its been pretty damn slow)) Such is the life of someone on disability. Have to find entertainment where i can..
Cheers |

I'm pretty sure Cherrie waits to make sure that you are somewhat serious about baiting. We have a high dropout rate at EaterU, but most of our graduates get Damien's. |

It looks like Cherrie has been away for a bit, which is probably why mentor requests are going a bit slower than usual. |

Hi Jackdaripper,
Have you looked in surplus? You can pick up a slew of scammers there http://forum.419eater.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=18&sid=3484906b37e2309cb4042315f2c8314b
You don't even have to tailor an individual reply to each lad's script. You might pick out a dozen or two & send an ASEM (accidently sent email) with just a couple of sentences about the 'money' you're getting ready to send, have sent, etc. It makes them crazy to see someone else getting money, so they'll respond.
Something else I've had to learn (being talked about in another thread) is patience. It's the key to successful baiting. Since I don't have the time I'd like to have to devote to baiting, I get quite impatient with only the 1 or 2 baits I usually have going.

I feel sure that the lovely Cherrie will take your little hand and guide you down the yellow brick road, any day now.
But a word of caution, Grasshopper, do not be impatient, less you can't return up the path of all things knowledgeably, and your left in the shit, alone and unloved..
Then you will never snatch the pebble, and enter the baiting world alone.. |

For those wondering why they don't get a mentor immediately on request - Cherrie has *loads* of requests to handle, but a lot of potential baiters are just 'passing traffic' - arrive, request a mentor, vanish. In order not to waste the time of the mentors and to make sure there is enough attention for the committed mentees, Cherrie will typically wait a short while to see that the potential mentees are committed enough to stick around, read the stickies, read Eater U, grab a surplus scammer, get involved, etc. That way, we can focus the love on the baiters most likely to cause decent damage to the scammers we all know and hate!
Baiting is a long game - you can't expect to get safaris and trophies from day one, it takes a lot of work to get to that point. This means being able to show a little patience in getting a mentor is a great pre-qualifier for being a good mentee!! |

I agree with having patience, I just hope I'm not stepping on anyone else's pet in the meantime 'cause I'm blundering about. Not that that would be a bad thing, though!
@MBL, I wanna know most of all -- how do you make your banana run while whistling? (Yeah, I know, I'm sure I've opened myself up for a wonderful mockery, but hey, I had to ask, so mock ahoy!) |

Hey Hey The Fae,
Training the 'nanas to whistle is easy once you've taught them to run...
You can't do any damage if you just visit surplus, pick one you fancy, read the stickies (just so you bait safely) and get going! Anything that grinds the lads down is great, but I'd suggest starting off with a bit of straight baiting - pick a scammer you lioke the look of and just drop them an email saying you're interested. No need to go for long involved plotlines just now, just feign interest and be the perfect compliant yet stupid victim (so mess things up, ask questions, misunderstand). They will be drooling over your emails |
