credit card & cheque - help needed

Hi there,

I am new on this site and hope to be on the right place here. I am working in a hotel and have received a weired inquiry for a meeting. It was very strange from the first email on as the "client" only wrote in capital letters.
After 2 - 3 emails with an offer and price details the following email arrived:

DEAR SIR/MADAM,

I HAVE PRESENTED YOU PRICE QUOTATION TO THE CEO AND HE HAS APPROVED IT, AND HE HAS ENDORSED THE STAY IN YOUR FACILITY.

ACCORDING TO HIS PRONOUNCEMENT, HE SAID THERE ARE SOME DIRECTORS FROM THE COMPANY'S BRANCH IN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA THAT ARE ALSO COMING FOR THE SEMINAR, BUT THE PREPAID TRAVEL AGENT, THAT IS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR FLIGHT LOGISTICS, DOES NOT HAVE A CREDIT CARD CHARGING FACILITY.

DUE TO THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE A CREDIT CARD CHARGING FACILITY, AND ALSO FOR THE FACT THAT IT IS INSECURE TO GIVE THE CREDIT CARD DETAILS TO TWO PARTIES TO AVOID MISAPPROPRIATION OF FINANCE, YOU ARE TO FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS ONCE YOU ARE IN POSSESSION OF THE CARD DETAILS:

1. CHARGE THE TOTAL SUM OF $6,320.00 FROM THE CREDIT CARD.

2. YOU ARE TO KEEP TAKE THE SUM OF $4,500 AS AN INITIAL DEPOSIT FOR SECURING THE RESERVATION.

3. YOU ARE TO SEND THE SUM OF $1,700.00 TO THE TRAVEL AGENT IN THE UNITED STATES TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR FLIGHT LOGISTICS THE DIRECTORS COMING FROM THERE.

THE REMAINING $120.00 SHOULD BE FOR ANY BANK COMMISSIONS INVOLVED IN THE TRANSFER OF THE FLIGHT CHARGES, TO THE TRAVEL AGENT.

ON ARRIVAL WE ARE TO SETTLE UP THE REMAINING BALANCE AND ANY OTHER THING THAT WILL BE PROCURED DURING OUR STAY IN YOUR FACILITY.

YOU ARE TO NOTIFY US ON ACCEPTANCE OF THESE TERMS, SO THAT WE GIVE YOU THE CARD DETAILS AND ALSO THE DETAILS OF THE TRAVEL AGENT.

WE AWAIT YOUR RESPONSE, HAVE A NICE DAY.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of scam?

I could ignore it but want to help somehow to get these criminals out of the world!

The credit card that they are paying your hotel with is stolen.

What will happen is that you will take the $6,320 charge and then send the $1,700 to the 'travel agent' by Western Union or MoneyGram.

Eventually, the owner of the stolen credit card will notice the charge and complain to his CC company about it and it will be refunded to him and debited from your merchant account, leaving your hotel $1,700 out of pocket.

There is not really much that you can do about it as all the information that you have been given is fake. But please PM one of the Mods with the credit card details and they will arrange for it to be reported as a stolen card.

Sorry, didn't read the bit where they said that they would send you the cc details.

As you are using your real life details, it is safer to drop all contact with them.

I will reply to them and see if I can get the details out of them and I'll also see about getting their fake email domain closed down as well.

Yes, but obviously don't process a transaction, or post the details on a public forum.

At the bottom of the index page, you will see which mods are on duty, thier names are in green.

Send as much detailas you can get by pm to a mod, and we will pass it along to where it can be neutralised and monitored.

@ stephan, sorry, I posted at the same time as you and left the building.

@ festo, if you take the details, and then later tell the scammer that the card was declined, there should be no comebacks to your hotel, hopefully he may stop trying to use it.

The benefits of getting the card stopped as soon as possible mean it's worth getting the details asap rather than trying to rebait them out of the lad, which could take days.

The email adress didnt get any hits on Google, but the postal adress is the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital. Of course the scammer could be anywhere, and certainly not there.

the address is real, in that it exisits. It is one of a number of small blocks of flats built on the site of a former hospital. Each block house 4 flats.

Checked with Companies House - no such company is registered.
This does not mean there is no business trading with that name, but it means they certainly won't have a CEO, and would only be a small trader. probably a back street garage.
