Bob Shaw wrote quite a few interesting books similar to a clark.

Now Douglas Adams, thats believable

Full of science, loads of fiction, and an explanation for just about everything.
OH! and a bit of humour thrown in. Perfect.

Well in that case .... Terry Pratchett (just ask Nanny Ogg)

(why are all my favourite SF authors coming up one after the other?) Laughing

^^ I've just finished Terry Pratchett's "Strata" - gives a full explanation on how the Flat Earth exactly (sort of) works, and why it was built (why, because they could).
Given the right technology, it could exist.

Mmm, SF. I'm lucky enough to have two friends who are total bookworms and heavily into scifi. Not all of these are hard SF, but the quality is high. Arranged by author, in recommended reading order:

Alfred Bester: The Stars My Destination
Ted Chiang: Stories of Your Life and Others (short stories)
Greg Egan: Luminous (short stories)
Richard Morgan: Altered Carbon, Broken Angels, Woken Furies
Charles Stross: Singularity Sky, Iron Sunrise, Saturn's Children, Halting State (WoW players will love HS, but it's great for those who hate MMORPGs as well.)
Theodore Sturgeon: More Than Human
Vernor Vinge: A Fire Upon the Deep, A Deepness in the Sky, Across Realtime, Collected Stories of Vernor Vinge (short stories)

If comics are more to your taste, I'll recommend Transmetropolitan, by Warren Ellis. 10 trade paperbacks in total, great stuff.
