Those ribbon connectors are the difference between a true separates system and a pretend separates system. All they do is make the system look good while degrading the sound. Richer Sounds used to have a gimmick where they would demonstrate an expensive all-in-one system against a budget separates system, both costing around £300. If you couldn't tell the difference they'd give you a free pack of cotton buds.

On a tight budget, I'd suggest buying a Cambridge Audio A1mk3 (£70), a Cambridge Audio CD5 (£100-120) and GALE 3010 speakers for £60. Add £20 for a pair of decent interconnects and £5 for speaker cable for a grand total of £255. I guarantee it will sound at least as good as your existing system, and you can upgrade each piece when you find more money.
