the us military is concerned about how to hardwire ethical decision-making logic into its killer robots - <click here>

i assume they won't be basing this on asimov's laws

they are also turning moths into recon cyborgs <click here>

So any moth not flying into the lights is suspect and should be swatted?

Or maybe as they are worried about battery life they should make them solar powered then they'd have a reason to fly around the lights.

Wonder if they've thought about how to avoid cats and bats

bats would certainly be an obvious counter-measure during the deployment phase.

and lizards could provide area security, because the cybermoths are supposed to land within 5m of a target and then stay there (becoming tasty sitting targets).

however, the cybermoths will be very effective against any enemy that does not have access to bat/lizard technology. hmmm...

This idea sounds like the World War II "Bat Bomb" scheme,
the US Army planed to attach small fire bombs to bats,
and release them near Japanese cities, the bats would
nest in wooden buildings, the bombs would go off, and burn down
the buildings.

The plan was never used because the bats liked to return
to to the test vehicles rather than fly a long way away.

Smile

in ww2 the russians allegedly trained dogs to expect to fed underneath tanks.
then they strapped magnetic mines to the dogs and let them loose in german formations.
unfortunately for the russians, the dogs could tell the difference between a t72 (food) and a panzer (no food).
it didn't end well for the dogs either.

These stories remind me of Project Pigeon where pigeons were trained to pilot bombs into ships.
