I posted my resume online a while ago since quite a few good companies in my area use careerbuilder.com. I decided to leave my resume public, despite the masses of insurance sales job offers I get, because every once in a while a good offer crops up. Today I found this in my email:

Quote:

Dear [me]

We are glad to inform you, that we have looked through your resume and it corresponds to our requirements.
Our company United Trading Inc, at the present moment requires workers in the US and EU.

Start working with us today! All that you need is to have the bank account and the opportunity of checking your e-mail twice day.
*Previous experience in finance/accounting is not a mandatory requirement.

It could even be a part time! Your earnings will depend on your speed and accuracy of completing assignments.
Salary starts from $3,000 USD(2,057 EUR) per month.

Please contact us: [their email] for additional information.
We look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
United Trading team,[sender's name],
[their email again]

A quick Google search brings up dozens of United Trade, Inc. results, the top one being a painful-to-view Asian food distribution site created in the mid-90s, if I'm any judge. Add to that the fact that the email is @live.com. The whole thing stinks of scam to me.

I'm not a baiter, and really don't have time to dedicate to learning it right now, but if someone wants to verify that it's a scam and play with it I'll be happy to provide the sender's name and email. Just send me a message.

Hi lyrical, thanks for stopping by. Very Happy

It sounds like a scam. Most of the scammers who harvest people from job sites are check scammers. They will ask you to cash checks for their "clients", send 90% or so back to them via Western Union, keeping the remainder as your commission. The checks will clear your bank within a few days, but you will still be held responsible for the funds when they are returned weeks or months later, and any amount of money you have wired off will be gone forever.

This is an especially vicious scam because it costs nothing to get started, and the banks can take a hard line with the victim, regardless of where the checks came from.

Well done for checking it out.

Thanks.

Thinking about it, it makes perfect sense that they would use these sites. It just never occurred to me until this email.

I know for a fact that there are many scammers hanging around the job websites. I have a fake CV posted on a couple job websites in the far east and get fraudulent offers frequently. Be aware that the scammers will often say they represent legitimate well-known companies too. Do not believe the websites they direct you to. They have fraudulent websites set up to support their scam. If someone offers you a job on the internet, be vary wary. If they start asking for 'fees' as a condition for employment, run the other way. It's a scam.

It's a good thing you are asking questions about it! Far too many honest hard-working people like yourself can fall victim to this type of scam, especially now in this economic climate.

Edit: for clarity!

CareerBuilder, Monster, all the job boards.

I know - my resume is out there, and my inbox is always full of bogus offers. Some end up in Junk, but others look legitimate enough on the surface to make it to the inbox.

I have a policy: never accept a job offer without going through at least a telephone interview, but preferably an in-person interview. After all, if you're going to work for someone, you want to check them out as thoroughly as they check you out, right?

You should see the stuff I get in response to my profile on freelance sites. Rolling Eyes

I'd say always a face to face interview! I don't know about you, but i would like to make sure that a) my boss is credible and that i could work for him/her and b) that the company is legit and i will actually get paid for all my hard work.

Never accept a job by email or phone.

Oh, don't worry about me. I'm a pretty skeptical person, and I'm not now nor would I ever be that desperate. I've also been lurking here long enough to have an idea of what to look for.

I just hadn't realized that they'd use job sites and wondered how common it was - though it seems pretty obvious, now. I wish I had the time to play around with this guy, but alas, no such luck.

Since I'm actually posting, I should do what I've been meaning to do for a while and thank you guys for dealing with so much of this trash. It's good to know you're out there making these people chase geese.
