Hello,

I got your contact in course of my inquiry to locate relations of my Deceased Client who died in an auto crash.
I am barrister John Mowbray practicing in all areas of tax,
but more particularly, private client work - trust tax,
offshore tax also charities and Inland Revenue prosecutions in complex tax evasion Cases.
On the 7th of August 2006 it was reported to my chambers that my Client,
his wife and their only daughter were involved in auto crash in Dublin (Ireland).
I’m contacting you in respect of the investment he has with AIB (Allied Irish Banks Group).
This request emerged when the bank contacted me for the attention of my Deceased Client (perhaps for one reason or the other,
they have tried contacting him and was unsuccessful).

I announced his death and protocols observed. I was mandated (as the deceased's attorney) to provide the Next of Kin,
to inherit the Deposits or they will freeze it as" Unclaimed Deposit" Unfortunately,
and unknown to the Finance Firm, the suppose heir was among the deceased family.
Hence, I seek your assistance to claim the fund into your Account since you share similar surname name with the Deceased client.
Note that this transaction is legal and is 100% risk free from both Sides,
all document backing this transaction will be provided as at when due,
if you are vested interesting, please get back to me.

But it does seem extremely fishy, especially if you have never talked to this guy before and because he's claiming it to be 100% risky free. He's also asking you to pose as the Next of Kin. All extremely shady.

I say: Bait him.

Yes, it's a bog standard 419 inheritance scam, if you Google some parts of the email text, for example:

You will get these results for scam emails where the same text has been used in their scam email formats:

That's a sure sign of an email sent out in bulk, with a batch of names in the BCC field, so that no recipient can see the names of the others.
Interestingly Google does show a John Mowbray QC, with knowledge of trust law. Not at that address, but nearby.
It's certainly a scam, and lads often use the names of real people and businesses in their scams. Barristers often feature in this type of scam, but usually imaginary ones.

what I didn't see asked - did this come to your private e-mail or one set up for baiting.

if this is your real life e-mail, set up a new baiting account and answer from there (just drop all correspondence with your real life account).

I have never heard of a real lawyer refer to himself as "barrister".

^^what he said. Further, I've checked with a couple. I've never heard one using 'Barrister' as a title, nor do the 2 I've spoken with today (yeah. Happy easter, and by the way, would you use 'barrister' as a title? Ever?. I'm all kinds of direct and stuff)

To me, that's always been one of the funnier parts. These lads always think that's a title that commands respect. No. It's a title that confirms scam even before I've read any of their format Smile

I am assuming that you both reside in the United States, where the term barrister is not used. It is used in jurisdictions in other parts of the world, so although using this term may scream "scam" to you, it wouldn't raise an eyebrow with people in many parts of the world.

perspective of uk, us, aus to name a few. As a term, it makes sense. As a title, not so much.

Bob Smith, Barrister. That works fine.

Barrister Bob Smith. Scammer, imho.

bruckner, thank you for the information. I am always learning. My point is still valid though. It may scream scam to you and some people but not to all. I wouldn't have known it's not used as a title.

And of course, if the title was so horrible that it screamed "RUN AWAY" to anyone that read it, they'd have dropped it years ago. Clearly it's providing some success.

I also love the ones that combine titles. Barrister Doctor, Doctor Professor ... and one that just made me spit coffee the other day, Mr Lady. Laughing

What provider are you using?
There should be somewhere saying "full header" giving you a load of what seems to be gibberish. Check the stickies here, it should be somewhere...

does your private e-mail have your personal information anywhere (like from signup, your real name used anywhere)...if it does, stop all correspondence on that account (the scammer won't notice if you are gone) and reply to his e-mail from an account set up just for your baiting habit. Again, he won't notice the difference...
