Thanks for the emails, Doc. You got him riled up there. But no, the lad isn't waiting for my itinerary, he has that. The only thing holding him up is money. Of course. Evil or Very Mad

He's still waiting for $2400 for "documents" that he has to bring me. Well, I sent it. It's not my fault another lad chopped it. Wink

He sent me three long emails today. Just a few snippets:

Please don't be angry at me for asking, but how do I know that if I send you another $2400 you're not just going to take that too, and then claim you never got it, just like the money I sent last week? I'm not trying to insult you but let's face it, I have never met you and I don't know you personally. I have trusted you completely but I also trusted Mr. Chukwu, and he never followed through. And now you're telling me he was just a criminal who stole my money. I'm in a state of shock. Do you have any idea how much money I paid to these people? If they've been stealing from me then that money is gone forever!

I don't know what to do, John. I'm worried now and I'm scared for my life because you said these criminals might try to kill me. Here I am in a foreign country carrying $40,000 and someone may be out to kill me and steal that money. I don't know how to know who is a fraudster trying to kill me and who is a real businessman who is trying to help me. I thought I knew but now you have me confused.

I have to think about this a bit more. I'm going to go have an early dinner and drink some wine and try to relax and think this through. I'll write to you later.

Okay, he's really flipping out now. but he's still harping on the $2400 (god how I'm getting sick of that!) and the implication is clear that he sees no reason in going unless he has the documents, and I have to pay for them first. So no money, no safari. Time to change the playing field:

I realized my mistake in all this. I should never have sent money to people I've never even met and don't really know. I mean, if I meet someone face to face and get to know them, then I can feel safe in trusting them. No one is going to look me straight in the eye and then steal from me, you know? There's just no way! If I am dealing directly with someone, and they look into my eyes and tell me the truth then I'll be safe. But sending money to people I've only dealt with by email or phone is too dangerous. I never knew that until you explained it.

So I'm not making that mistake again. Before I left for dinner tonight I was thinking very seriously of just turning around and going back home. I'm afraid now, you said someone might try to kill me. But after thinking about it I realized that the safari camp is a luxury establishment with branches all over the world. I know that I will be safe there. I know that the management would never let anyone put me in danger while I'm their customer. And since they will pick me up at the airport and take me back again I don't have to worry about someone trying to kill me. So I've decided the best thing for me to do is to go ahead with my plans and go to Africa on Friday and do this transaction in person. No more handling it by email or phone.

So here's what I want you to do. You need to meet me at the Niamey airport when I arrive on Friday. I need to meet you in person. I need to get to know you and to look you in the eyes so I know you're not like Mr. Chukwu and the others who have cheated me for so long. I know that if you are willing to make that effort and meet me face to face then I can trust you. Then I will give you the $2400 you need, in cash. I realize this means that you can't bring the documents with you for me to sign on Saturday. That's okay. I told you before that I'm not in a hurry. I've been waiting over two years, a few more days won't matter. And I've already planned to stay in Africa for almost two weeks so we'll have plenty of time to finish everything. So you come meet me at the airport, we'll spend some time together getting to know each other over the weekend, and then on Sunday you can take the $2400 and go back to Nigeria to get the documents.

I realize that is an inconvenience for you and it does mean you have to travel back and forth a couple of times, but I will reimburse you for all your travel and any extra time you have to spend on this. If you go back to Nigeria and can get the documents on Monday, you can come back to the camp with them as soon as possible, hopefully Monday night but otherwise on Tuesday. We'll have plenty of time. It's not far so it's not a big deal for you to make that small effort. It pales in comparison to all I am going through to get there.

What I need you to do tomorrow is to make absolutely sure that you have arranged for all the necessary documents. I don't want to find out on Monday or Tuesday that something else is needed. Please be thorough! Be sure that there is nothing forgotten. That way when I see you on Friday I can cover anything else that may come up. Mr. Uchenna mentioned the legal fees needed to change the fund from Ronald's name to mine. Find out how much they are so I can give you that money at the same time as the $2400. I don't want any surprises! I just want this finished. I'm prepared to pay whatever it takes but I will only do it in person, and only directly with the person or persons who can actually finalize this contract. I am not taking any chances anymore.

Morning in Paris and Lagos now. The lad just got this email:

I'm sure you'll like them, and I enjoy making people happy with nice gifts so it will make me happy too.

I'll check in with you later this afternoon when I get back to the hotel. If there's anything else you'd like me to bring you from Paris just let me know, I'll have some time this evening and many of the fine boutiques are open late.

I do want you to know that I'm feeling much more reassured now, and not so scared as I felt yesterday. I think we will have some fun this weekend, before we have to get serious again.

Wow, what a surprise....

When I got up this morning there was nothing from the lad. Okay, makes sense -- I was leaving for the airport shortly after I wrote to him, there's not much point in his writing to me if I'm going to be on the plane.

But 15 minutes ago he sent this:

I'd wager he's found a lad in Benin to partner the job with. Lazy twit. But hope springs eternal, maybe he's planning to go to the camp Saturday morning rather than meet me at the airport. He did leave that as an option in earlier emails.

I'll write him from the camp in a few hours, royally pissed that he didn't meet me. And perhaps it's time to bring my fake lad back into play. If I can't get this clown to travel I can at least torment him over his laziness by having another lad take all my money.
