Some of my favourites have already had a mention, Jeff Healey, JM Hendrix, Jimmy Page.

While I like Clapton and Gilmour, I reckon Clapton often plays too much, as if he was getting paid by the note, I preferred his understated stuff, like Cream's 'We're Going Wrong', where the pauses are as good as what he plays. Gilmour was awesome as a part of Floyd, my wife loves his solo stuff, but I think he overdoes the 'wistfull' thing, he must have used whole tanker loads of wist.

My favourite sadly got merged with another top guitarist, Keef Richards, to produce a corporate 'job share' sound, many years ago. Maybe their addiction demons meant it made sense to merge the sound, they can turn down whoever is the most out of it.

However, with the Faces, Ronnie Wood took some beating.

I saw them once at Blackpool, the best gig I ever went to, and I've been to a few. We all ended stood on the seats in the Opera House, swaying with the music, while the band drank their way through a mountain of spirits on the piano top.

Sadly Rod Stewart's ego and the theft of Ronnie by the Stones, who wanted the competition out of the way, killed the band soon after.

Is B.B.King still alive? One of the few guys who can be recognised after the first note - but maybe its more the combination with his steamtrain-voice than his guitar-skills.

Not an obvious choice but I'd vote for Wilco Johnson.

I've seen him many times and he gets the strangest sounds out of a guitar. You always know when Wilco is playing.

While pehaps early,has anyone mentioned Les Paul yet?An early artist on the electric guitar.His work with Mary Ford,though dated by todays standards,was revolutionary for the time.
