When asked to elaborate further, our source declined to comment for fear of being mistaken as a member of politcal activist group and being banished.

Note the copyright breach there, and apologies and attribution to the writers of "The Lone Ranger".

callum and I are of course organising a resistance movement to protest against this infringement of our copyright rights. Lime green paint is no longer unavailable in retail stores across New Zealand.

But aren't you alowed by international agreement to copy up to one chapter or 10% of a book (whichever is the lesser) without payment?

I'm joining Nelsonsbattle and Callum in their protest. I have a lot of friends on another forum who are dead-set against it too. This is pretty crazy. They might as well stop providing internet in NZ fullstop if they were to punish copyright infringement through ceasing internet access.

I've heard something like that too, though that may be only copying for educational purposes.

Maybe it was copying content, that you're allowed to copy one chapter/article/internet page or 10% of a book. I was told this in a business context some time ago, I'm a technical writer and never could get into the paperless office philosophy. Of course you can quote as much as you like, with the appropriate attribution.

I'm not sure on how much you can legally copy, but I know you can still be done if you copy the bit that's going to sell the book. IE, why Gerald Ford sued a magazine for copying 300 words from his 200,000 word autobiography. It was the part about why he pardoned Nixon.

I heard about the "10%/one chapter" thing it back in high school, so I wasn't too sure how far that extended.

I was introduced to this proposal/piece of rubbish initially though a creative friend, and today I came across a link he gave me to a petition against it, though primarily though an artist/musician etc. point of view.

Back on topic - I'm quite amazed to see that since I signed the petition there have been about 7000 more signatures.

If it does end up going through I am all for dobbing in the families of politicians supporting it.

My understanding is that the law will force ISPs to disconnect anyone accused of copyright violations.

Well, just accuse anyone, the PM, Minister of Finance, Governor General, Chief of Police - the ISP would be obliged to disconnect them all.

And I thought that one of the basic tennants of the Westminster political system was that a person was innocent until proven guilty.

I'd expect that the government would have their own internet covered in anticipation of reports against them. Getting them through their families would be a more effective method of getting the point across. Well, so I've been convinced by some blogs about it that I've read the past few days.
