A friend got an email from the son of one of his Nigerian classmates saying his dad had been killed and he needed help moving his bank account out of the country.. you know the rest.
The interesting part is my friend emailed all his classmates (they kept in touch from the course over the years) warning them of the scam; and thay all had gotten the same email.
Fortunately none fell for it... |

Welcome to the Eater - I'm glad nobody fell for it...
Perhaps you could tell them about this site and fight the enemy for the greater good? |

That probably has much to do with the way that scammers harvest the email addresses that they target.
If your friend and his classmates had signed up to a school reunion site or anywhere else on the net together, and left their email addresses there, the lad would have come along with a little program called a "spider" or an email extractor. He would have then gathered all of those addresses from that one place and then massmailed the scam out to them. |

Mod edit - no need to quote the full post directly above, we can see it just there ^^^ - SP
I had thought of that but the nature of the class and organization makes that unlikely as the email list was maintained by the students; as does knowing the name and history of their Nigerian classmate. It is possible, however, and I'll ask my friend if they ever signed up on a reunion site. |
