Hi everyone,

I found this forum while doing research on that stupid "this is customer service calling to verify your model # scam". I have to tell you, reading this forum has been quite entertaining! I can't believe some of the scams out there today and I give you all applause that have turned the tables on the scammers.

My reason for posting today is regarding a Geico scam that has been floating around recently. My co-worker almost fell for this scam a few weeks ago and fortunately, I took over and ended up turning the tables on the would be scammer.

The scam starts off a little like this:

The scammer will call and ask for a name. The scammer will claim that they are from the insurance claims department of Geico. When you get on the phone, they will tell you that they are calling regarding an accident claim that happened on X date. They will also ask you to verify which vehicle you have covered under the Geico policy. They will tell you that an accident report was filed by the local police department and that they need to get some personal information from you regarding this claim.

Okay, so here is where it gets tricky.....they can name one personal identifying thing about you - mainly the county that you live in.

My co-worker asked for the woman's phone number and told her that she would call her back. Mysteriously, the woman could not be called back at the number and said she would call back. When the scammer called back, I got on the phone and pretended to be my co-worker. (we sound alike on the phone)

I did not give any personal information but I did ask her for the tag number of the vehicle that was involved. She didn't have that information. (go figure) I also asked her which department filed the police report. She said the City of ____. What she didn't know is that our county PD takes the police reports in this area and not the city PD. Then I asked her for the officer's name was on the report. She gave me some fake name. Then she said "I need to verify your date of birth and your social security number in order to release any more information regarding this claim".

I politely told her that I would contact the police department and speak to the officer regarding this. I also told her that I would not verfy any information without the officer being present and on speaker phone during the coversation. After all, he is the one who filed this report, correct?

*click* ........that was the end of that coversation. She has not called back.

I just wanted you guys to be aware of this scam. BE CAREFUL when dealing with these people because they are very tricky in trying to get information from you. An email has been sent to Geico warning them of this scam. I don't know how these scammer are getting insurance information on people like this, but they are.

Nice work, and thanks for the heads up. That is social engineering towards identity theft. Good for you for spotting it.
