As the more established members will remember I'm a complete and utter dickhead when it comes to remembering even simple procedures involving anything electronic. So the stupid PC related question this time is - How do I do a screen capture, take a screen shot?

I have found the Print Screen Key, but I can't for the life of me find where the image is stored by default. Any one can help?

BTW, it's my first visit here for a bloody looong time so a rather small hello to all old & new.

Are you running XP or Vista?

If you are running Vista I can tell you how, but XP I can't help....sorry.

Just a note...I've found that sometimes I have to hit Shift + Print Screen in order to capture the image.

Shift print screen will grab only the current window that you are working in. Just print screen will grab your entire desktop. Using the shift can help cut down on cropping.

Are you using Firefox? If so, here is an extension that will export your screen to a .jpeg in one click. (Just add the page2.jpeg button, and it will be on the toolbar) CLICK

Edit: If you save the image, and zoom in, then you can read it just as clear as it was posted.

Edit again: Once I shared it via Photobucket the image was degraded. Is there a volunteer to allow me to send the original .jpeg via Email to see if it was Photobucket that degraded the image?

Last Edit: Photobucket degraded the image, I sent the original image (gathered by the extension I mentioned) to another person via Email, and it did not suffer, she was able to read it fine.

This was way too much work, just use "Print Scrn" and export to Paint or Wordpad. Laughing

The latest versions of the Gimp allow you to select a screen area to grab, as well as a single window or the whole screen. (Menu: File->Acquire)

I may well install that Firefox extension; it looks like it grabs the whole page, not just what is showing in the window.

Printkey2000 is a nice tool for XP that works a bit like the Vista snipping tool.
It hasn't developed further since 9 years but it still does the job.
Download and save it somewhere on your C: drive, put a link to it in your startup folder (computer illiterates, download to your desktop and manually start it when starting the PC).
Any time you press the PrtScn key it will pop up and allow you to crop the part of the screen you need (or the whole desktop), and allow you to paste, save or print the captured part.
