I saw this on CNN this morning. Apparently Boost (subsidary of Sprint/Nextel) has been around a while but this plan is new & is available Jan. 22, 2009. $50.00 a month TOTAL, no hidden fees, & no contract sounds pretty good!
My contract with Verizon is up next week and I'm going to look into it. I don't use or need a fancy cell phone. The article mentions call quality though, so it might turn out to be a toss-up.

Call quality will an issue depending on where you live. If you live in a large metro area, the network traffice will be high. Sprint owns two networks with two different frequencies.
CDMA, the legacy Sprint network also is used by resellers like Tracphone and Virgin Mobile. The latter has 15% of it's shares owned by Sprint. The amount of traffic and users for voice and data it can handle is enormous. It can also roam on Alltel and Verizon's networks so you can have coverage in just about any area of the US, as well as a great deal of Canada on the Telus network.
IDEN, the legacy Nextel network only handles Nextel and Boost users but the phones will work in places like Peru, Mexico, Israel and a couple other places.
The only downside to this unlimited $50 plan is you have a local calling area to make unlimited calls from, much like Cricket or MetroPCS. However, the rate for using the phone while outside your local area is only $0.15 a minute versus Cricket and others which charge you $0.50 or more.
Sorry for writing a book but I work for the parent company (Sprint) so I see this all day at work. |
