I sell a lot of items on craigslist and I get 8 scam emails for every 1 legitimage email. It the usual thing, they want to send me extra money for shipping and have me ship it to Nigera, England, Poland, etc..
Usually I just reply and say I will agree to ship it if they will put the money in CASH in an envlope in U.S. Dollars and mail it to me. Obviously, they never agree to this. (Although, if they did, I would ship them the product)
Anyway, I've always wanted to bait these guys. Now I was thinking I should put up a fake high-end laptop on craigslist. The advantage with craigslist over ebay is that with ebay legitimate buyers will bid on the item. With craigslist I can tell the legit people that I already sold the item and no harm is done. But the people wanting to scam me will be baited.
The thing I need help with is making sure that I remain completely anonymous. Also I want to convince the buyer to pay for shipping somehow so that I can send them a box of rocks. I was sort of thinking that if I could convince them to log in to UPS or Fedex or something and create the shipment then email me the mailing label, I could package up a bunch of rocks, slap on the label, and take it down to the UPS store and just leave it in there drop off area. That way nobody knows where it came from.
Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated. |

That, isn't too hard, what you're going to need to do is make an email account, I like gmail, and use all fake stuff. Then, just login to the web interface if you want to be "completely safe", but really that's not necessary. Especially if you live in a big city. Anyways. Thats the quick guide. But go read all of Eater U and request a mentor.

Now this is going to be much harder to do, they will say "take money from the check" over and over again, they most likely won't pay. I don't bait these guys though, maybe someone who does do fake check scams more can help you with that, however, I want to stress that it is really unlikely, and besides, they don't give out there real address, they are just concerned with you cashing the fake check and sending it back.
As I said before. Go read all of Eater U and request a mentor. Happy Baiting. |

I find it unlikely. The vast majority of these people are wanting to pay with paypal. I tried testing one of the guys a few weeks ago, thinking he was going to send me a fake email from paypal. So I gave him a fake paypal user-id. But he actually checked it and wrote back that the paypal user-id was invalid.
So, honestly, I'm not sure how they operate. |

My business got hit by this from someone in Asia.
What they do is set up a free porn site, require that someone give a credit card to prove they are at least 18, but do not make a charge on the card. Or it's an outright stolen card.
They then buy stuff from small businesses in the US, have it sent to other countries, then the real card owner disputes the credit card charge. They entice you by offering to pay more for shipping. And now they have it mailed to some other country and then forwarded to them.
The one I got hit with came through my shopping cart, it wasn't even requesting expedited shipping.
Since I have a lot business coming from there, I wasn't overly suspicious but the amount of the order was so big, that I contacted the credit card company. They said no problem. Then the charge was reversed by the card owner, I called the bank back and they told me tough crap.
Oh, and they didn't want any information on the scammer, where the order was sent, nothing.
I had no recourse because some jerk gave his credit card to a porn site (I traced the IP address. . . ) |
