Hello everyone. I'm a newbie around here and figure that it would be nice to share where I stand in my first bait. I started baiting after being inspired by the This American Life podcast and because the end the of the year is a slow and boring time in my business.

The premise: Mrs. Mary P4rk3r wants to bequeath her husband's fortune to someone that will use it to take care of orphans and unwed mothers.

Let me introduce the 419 characters:
Mr. Robert P4rk3r - He worked for Chevron/Texaco for 20 years and before he died he deposited GBP 17.5M in a bank account in the UK.

Mrs. Mary P4rk3r - Poor soul. When she first contacted me on December 10 she had "limited days to live due to the stroke and cancerous problems". Mrs. P4rk3r passed on December 16. May God bless her soul.

Barrister B1££ Gat3way - He is taking care of Mrs. P4rk3r's estate.

Mr. Richard 4nd3rs0n - He works for the Prud3nt14l F1n4nc3 Trust B4nk. I heard from him once but I stopped interacting with him and went back to Mr. Gat3way who seems to be in close contact with Mr. 4nd3rs0n.

I chose to set up my character in Thailand as I have enough of an understanding of the country to be able to sound credible and I have a prepaid Thai SIM which can be used to accept calls regardless of my actual location.

My characters:
Mr. Fr4n1cs S4lv4d0r - US Citizen who has been living in Northeast Thailand and runs an orphanage and center for unwed mothers.

Ms. S1tth4d0n Onnamapac3 - Works at the orphanage. He English isn't so great and she mixes up the Barrister's name all the time and addresses him as Mr. G3taway.

Mr. Monkunt Chomandlikavajiena - He is the accountant of the orphanage.

So what has transpired in the past 20 days?

During the first week we had the drama of Mrs. P4rk3r's illness. It took her two days to pass me to the barrister.

Because she was so sick the unwed mothers decided that it would be a good idea to pray for her:

Quote:

Dear mother Mary,
Thank you for agreeing to help the poor orphaned children and unwed mothers of Thailand. The funds of your late husband will be put to good use and will ensure that these children to not go hungry and their mothers are properly clothed. It is of utmost importance that the funds reach the trust account quickly as the decline in tourists due to the airport closure is creating a dire situation. Although the airport has reopened the situation has still not returned to what it was before.

I have included your attorney on this email to ensure that he has my contact information. I look forward to hearing from him very soon.

The women of the centre are going to the Wat (temple) today to meditate on your husbands kind spirit and pray for a recovery for you.

The monks at the Wat have asked for more information on your condition so they can ensure that they are using the proper meditation tactics to bring about your recovery. Please provide the details swiftly.

Sincerely and appreciative with brotherly love,
Fr4n1cs

Of course it is important to carry out the proper prayers...

Quote:

Dear Mr. Gat3way,
In the morning the 17 unwed mothers in our care will go to the Wat to pray for Mrs. P4rk3r. We are preparing their saffron robes. The monk has requested that we provide him with Mary's maiden name and the names of her father and mother in order to choose the right incense to burn. Please provide this information as soon as possible.

Sincerely and concerned,
Fr4n1cs

At the end of the first week Mrs. P4rk3r died while Fr4n1cs was taking care to provide verification information to Mr. Gat3way.

I provided an actual adress in a small town in Thailand with an offset of the house number by a couple of numbers. I provided the real Thai phone number mentioned above. When asked for a scan of my passport I explained that there was no scanner in the village and the barrister accepted just the passport number by itself. I provided a real US passport number with a few digits changed.

Just as Mrs. P4rk3r was dying there was a terrible flood at the orphanage. This caused the roof to cave in and we needed to bring in some men to make the repairs.

Quote:

Dear Mr. Gat3way,
Thank you for passing this most difficult news. I apologize that it has taken so long to respond but we have had a tragedy of our own. Due to the heavy rains the roof of one of the rooms where the orphans sleep collapsed and 6 of the children were injured. We have been busy tending to their injuries and repairing the roof as the rainy season is not yet over.

We are saddened by the news of the passing of this most holy woman. A plaque is being prepared in her loving memory. Obviously the funds from her generous donation will be used to pay for the needed repairs and reinforcement of the buildings but now we will also have some very expensive medical bills to pay. The money cannot arrive soon enough.

Thank you for your speedy handling of the registration of the documents. We will take care of the documentation you included below posthaste.

Regards,
Fr4n1cs

This has increased the urgency in receiving the funds. Especially since the men have now come for their payment and are threatening to take some of the unwed mothers if we don't pay up!

Now the bank contacts Fr4n1cs but as Christmas was approaching Fr4n1cs headed off to the US and this gave me the opening to introduce a new character, Ms. S1tth4d0n Onnamapac3 . Her English isn't so good so when the bank sends a long letter asking for payment of a fee to reactivate the dormand account she thinks that it is the barrister that needs to pay.

Quote:

Dear Mister G3taway,
I am Khun S1tth4d0n Onnamapac3 administrater for the orphanage here in Pr4khon Ch4i. Mr. Fr4n1cs has gone to America to celebrate his holidays and asked me to look at his mail account. Today we got this message. I am not sure but I think they need you to send them 2500 dollars for activation. This is very important to do quickly becuase the men who repaired the roof are coming next week for their money. Please pay the fee quickly so that we can pay the men next week.

Thank you,
S1tth4d0n

Quote:

Dear Mr. 4nd3rs0n,
Mr. Fr4n1cs has gone to America for Christmas. I have asked Mr. G3taway the lawyer for Mrs. Mary to please foward to you the 2500 dollars soon so the transfer can begin. Please let me know when Mr. G3taway gives you the money.

Sincerly,
Khun S1tth4d0n Onnamapac3

Mr. Gat3way sends a long letter explaining the activation fee and how time is of the essence and that we need to send a W3st3rn Union payment quickly before the funds are seized at the end of the year due to inactivity.

This is quite a lot for the woman to understand so she responds...

Quote:

Dear Mr. G3taway,
Sorry but I don't understand. My English is not so good to understand all of this. Mr Fr4n1cs is gone for the Christmas holiday and asked me to read email so he doesn't miss anything. How will you send 5000 dollars? In baht I think this is 150000 baht.

Thank you mak mak,
Khun S1tth4d0n Onnamapac3

So Mr. Gat3way send another long message trying to explain how to send the W3st3rn Union payment to which she responds:

Quote:

Dear Mr. G3taway,
Ok, let me know when you have paid W3st3rn Union and I will tell Mr. Fr4n1cs. Will it come to the bank in Pr4khon Ch4i?

Thank you,
Khun S1tth4d0n Onnamapac3

Now Mr. Gat3way is getting worried and send the following email:

Quote:

Subject: GET ME MR. FRANCIS ASAP
Dear Madam,

Please contact Mr. Fr4n1cs and get in touch with me because i don't seem to understand why he gave you the right to handle this transaction. I need him to attend to issues immediately.

Sincerely,
Attorney B1££ Gat3way.

He just doesn't get the concept of Christmas holidays she assumes...

Quote:

Dear Mr. G3taway,
I just told you that Mr. Fr4n1cs is in America for Christmas! He told me to get from you the swift account so he can transfer money. Why does orphans need to pay money? We have no money and have to pay bill for roof from rain quickly because men will come at the end of the week to collect repair money. If we don't pay they will take one of the women.

Thank you,
Khun S1tth4d0n Onnamapac3

Finally Fr4n1cs arrives in American and assures that all is being taken care of. Mr. Gat3way is very much releived and a bit annoyed that Fr4n1cs has involved other people in the transaction. Mr. Gat3way figures that since Fr4n1cs is in the US it would be easiest to initiate a W3st3rn Union payment. Of course Fr4n1cs explains all of his funds are in Thailand so he'll have to use online banking. Mr. Gat3way gives a UK-based bank account to be used (sent to Alan Closed lad accounts). The next day Fr4n1cs says that he'll ask the accountant to make the transfer in the morning and Mr. Gat3way is ok with that then quickly comes back saying to hold the transfer and await instructions. After trying to get the transaction back to W3st3rn Union he gives up and says to use the bank transfer.

Oh no! There is trouble at the orphanage!

Quote:

Dear Mr. Gat3way,
We need some of the money to be transferred immediately. We cannot wait until the return to Thailand as the repair bills for the roof are due. As stated I can perform an online transfer to the bank for the reactivation fee. How can their be complications in sending money to a bank? I don't understand. Is this really a bank that we are working with to free up the funds? I will remain awake and wait for your instructions with a bank account that can be used for the online transfer. Please respond ASAP as the men who repaired the roof are not very nice and have threatened Khun Onnamapac3.

Regards,
Fr4n1cs

The next day Mr. Gat3way again tries to explain that the bank transfer will be flagged by the authorities and held up. This is not the story that Fr4n1cs wants to hear. He may just take this transaction to another bank and lawyer!

Quote:
Dear Mr. Gat3way,
I don't understand why the legitimacy of the transfer would be in question. I work with a very reputable bank in Thailand and there has never been a problem with transfers in the past. I cannot accept that you call into question the legitimacy of my bank. My relationship with the bank manager is excellent and I assure you that the transfer would never be considered illegitimate by any reputable bank. Please provide a bank account as soon as possible for the transfer or I will have to look elsewhere to complete this transaction.

Fr4n1cs

At this point Mr. Gat3way goes back to an email from the very beginning and finds the Thai mobile number I provided and we talk on the phone for about 30 seconds before getting cut off. Mr. Gat3way is reassured but not Fr4n1cs is getting a bit wary of the transaction:

Quote:

Mr. Gat3way,
I have passed this information to the accountant. Unfortunately the bank in Pr4khon Ch4i has closed for the day and will only be open again tomorrow morning. He will proceed with the transfer in the morning. He has asked me why the account name is 4ll4ns Ult1m4t3f1x Ltd. if the payment is going to the bank for reactivation. Should't the account be owned by the bank? Please advise.

Regards,
Fr4n1cs

Mr. Gat3way explains:

Quote:
Dear Fr4n1cs,

I took notice of the observation myself and asked Mr. 4nd3rs0n why as well. He only instructed that we go ahead with the transfer and assured me that there was nothing to worry about. he went on to say that besides the major maintenance and upgrade that they are running during this xmas hols, they also have certain reasons why you have to make payment as directed.

He has promised that if eventually the payment can be made tomorrow like you stated, it should be confirmed before the end of the week and if this is so then they will immediately activate the account and transfer the entire funds to a designated account of your choice or however you want it.

Once again i thank you for your patience, time, efforts and contributions so far in this transaction, i know that my deceased client would indeed be overwhelmed once we are able to carry and fulfil her wish, i know we would be rewarded for our labour if not now but in eternity. Please keep me posted and tell the accountant to make sure he acts as instructed first thing in the morning so we can conclude this transaction this weekend or at most early next week.

Sincerely,
Attorney B1££ Gat3way.

Being Christmas, Fr4n1cs is busy and we bring back Ms. Onnamapac3

Quote:
Dear Mr. G3taway,
I'm sorry, my English not so good and maybe confused. Mr. Fr4n1cs not here, went home for Christmas. What does beneficiary mean? I looked it up and think it says oprhange gets money, no pay many.

Thanks,
Khun S1tth4d0n Onnamapac3 (Miss)

Quote:
Dear Mr. G3taway,
Mr. Fr4n1cs called on the phone and I read your email to him. He wants to know what swift account to send the money to. I still don't understand how beneficiary sends money and not get money. Can you give swift account for Mr. Fr4n1cs?

Thank you,
Khun S1tth4d0n Onnamapac3

Mr. Gat3way explains briefly. Fr4n1cs comes back now explains that the accountant is getting a bit suspicious and asks for Mr. Gat3way to pose for a picture in front of the bank. Mr. Gat3way sends a scan of the picture page of a UK passport with the following:

Quote:
Dear Fr4n1cs,

To be honest with you i am very very disappointed about what you have suggested but i will not take any offenses at the moment. Do you think that the bank is just a stone throw from my house or my office, from both locations it would take me 4 hours to get to the bank and believe me i am not in the mode for such a trip at the moment.

You are in charge of handling this issue and remember that all part of this transaction ought to hae been kept confidential till concluded. If not for the fact that you are not in Thailand at present do you think i would have agreed to your involving the accountant in the first place. You bringing this to my notice means you cannot even be in total control over the funds when eventually the are transferred to you. Mind you it's you that is the beneficiary to deceased madam P4rk3r and not this accountant so if he decides to waste our time rather than act as directed, all blames would be on you.

However, i have attached here a copy of my international passport just so you know exactly whom you are dealing with and believe me this is the best i can do to prove myself to you. I indulge you to instruct the accountant to act as instructed and if he is not willing to make payments to the bank with details sent him then instruct him to use W3st3rn Union and have it sent directly to Mr. 4nd3rs0n, at least he works at the bank if this would suite him more.

I don't need such issues coming to me because i believe that you are beneficiary and should be able to tackle and handle issues such as this. I await your response asap.

Sincerely,
Attorney B1££ Gat3way.

Ms. Onnamapac3 sends Gat3way a message explaining that the transfer isn't going through. He checks wih the bank and assures that all is well.

On Christmas day Mr. Gat3way receives the greatest gift. Notification by Ms. Onnamapac3 from her own email address that the money has been sent. Gat3way informs her that he needs a scan of the receipt. He also sends this to Fr4n1cs. Being Christmas and Boxing Day, Fr4n1cs goes silent for 2 days. However Ms. Onnamapac3 explains that she has received no payment from Mr. Gat3way and will give him receipt when she gets the payment. She also sends him a sexy Christmas e-card which he never opens. Sad

On December 26th and 27th Mr. Gat3way sends additional requests for the scanned receipt. By December 28th he's getting antsy:

Quote:
Dear Fr4n1cs,

I am in receipt of your mail. want you to understand that first and foremost, i do not even believe that there was any payment made at all by the so-called accountant. Till now i have requested from all parties currently involved in this transaction a copy of the payment receipt with which the payment was effected and i haven't seen it. This is one proof that the bank needs to confirm the payment. However i have spoken with Mr. 4nd3rs0n and as at yesterday he has confirmed that no payment was received in the account.

This is what i need you to do as i am obviously not happy with the way you Mr. Fr4n1cs have been handling this situation. Contact whomever you left in charge at the orphanage to ensure that they should put a tracer on the payment they have claimed to have made so they will know where the money is especially now that the bank has confirmed that they have not received the funds. If it was really paid then send to me the scanned copy of the receipt but if on the otherhand no payment was initially made to offset the necessary payment for the account activation then contact them and instruct them to make the payment through W3st3rn Union directly to Mr. 4nd3rs0n.

Note that you are the cause of this delay as we would have finalised this transaction if you had not left this issues with people whom are really not concerned with it. I know for sure that my client would be happy with the way things are going right now. This payment issue is getting more complicated so i suggest that you stay on top of this and act right.

Get back to me with positive updates about the payment asap.

Sincerely,
Attorney B1££ Gat3way.

This doesn't sit well with Fr4n1cs:

Quote:
Dear Mr. Gat3way,
I am quite offended by your tone and the utter disrespect you have shown to me, the orphanage employees and our accountant. Are you trying to make off with the money we have collected through donations? Are you trying to steal the funds that Mrs. P4rk3r so desperately wanted to be used for a good cause? Perhaps Mr. 4nd3rs0n is siphoning off the funds. I expect that you will get together with Mr. 4nd3rs0n ASAP and sort this issue out. It is unacceptable!

Fr4n1cs

Mr. Gat3way apologizes and Fr4n1cs accepts the apology and informs Mr. Gat3way that by December 30 he expects the GBP 17.5M to be transferred.

Dec 30 and Mr. Gat3way is still asking for the scanned transfer receipt.

Today I set up an email account for the accountant. He forwarded a large file full of garbage with the UK bank account as the filename but wrong suffix and then encrypted and placed into a password-protected RAR... I mean he forwarded the scan of the receipt to Ms. Onnamapac3 . The text of his email was all in Thai but spread among the wikipedia explanation of SW1FT numbers are the IBAN and account number of the UK account. She has forwarded this to Mr. Gat3way.

I expect that the Mr. Gat3way will spend some time trying to open the file and then contact Fr4n1cs. Oh, Fr4n1cs now has an out of office response on his email explaining that he is in Europe for the New Year and to contact Ms. Onnamapac3 in case of anything urgent. The out of office alert also has some Thai text in it with her email address.

I have verified using the tr4ckrm4il that the lad is in Nigeria. Since he is providing a UK bank account which is owned by an actual UK LTD I'm assuming there is an accomplish located nearby. The LTD being used is in Spr1ng G4rdens outside of Manch3ster. I was thinking that since the bank transfer seems screwed up perhaps Fr4n1cs would fly through London to meet them and give them the GBP 2500 + expenses since the bank transfer isn't working out so well. Do you think there is a chance of making the accomplice travel?

Any other ideas or comments are very much appreciated.

^^^

Any advice on how to do so based on what I've given above? I was thinking that passing through some place 200 miles from the on the way back to Thailand could be a way to draw them out.
