Was it a visa debit card or a credit card ? and what company ?

The rules are different for credit cards and visa cards, and different companies have different policies about overseas claims.

I'm presuming that you are in the UK.

Hi,

I got done by this same scam!

I explained to the advisor that I did not want to pay for this as I like to see something before buying; she just said she needed to confirm that I was eligible for the offer and at not point did she say the money was taken from my account!

I paid by credit card and as soon as I put the phone down and contacted them to check if any money had been taken out of my account and yes they took out £550.99 from my account which I have disputed.

I have also filed a complaint with BBB http://atlanta.bbb.org

I am praying that I can get my money back however from all the research I have done it is going to be a long shot!

I would welcome any advice anyone can offer

^^^
Do I understand that you gave your credit card details to someone who called you, unsolicited, on the phone and who said that they wanted them just to see if you were eligible for an offer you didn't necessarily want?

I'm sorry that you got scammed by these vermin - an expensive lesson indeed.

Could I suggest that you pop over to our sister site, Scamwarners.com and post your story there?

It may help others to realise that if you give someone who calls them with an offer and who asks for credit card details to "see if you are eligible", they could end up losing money.

Some sites which are only, er, for adult viewing claim they are free, but want your credit card details for 'age verification'.

Yeah right. If I had been born yesterday, I wouldn't have a cc yet. Rolling Eyes

Excuse delay in reply I have been a little busy but yes am in the sunny UK!

Luckily for my Mum the fraudsquad had them pegged as it was happening.

They actually tried to take thousands before settling for the smaller amount.

The Police we're involved before they even managed to get the circa £500 smaller amount.

I believe the Police tracked them to Australia and this was all during the same week that Internet Explorer exploit was uncovered so am assuming that is how they got hold of my Mum's CC details as she was using IE up untill that very day and before I heard the News comcerning IE's Chinese hacker problem.

Needless to say I warned my Mum about the IE problem but alas was a day too late. Due to the Police and fraudsquad being on to it luckily it gets sorted and the money reimibursed - I hope the other poster above does not have to learn such a relatively expensive lesson and please get a new CC issued if you have not done so already or they will pounce on you again when you least expect it!

Am assuming it was the IE exploit that they used to gain access to the details but if anyone else thinks differently and knows more about possible ways they could have gained her CC details please do let me know via PM (not on forum).
