I am looking for a tool that will let me cut a section out of a video I'm playing on my computer. Preferably to drop into a PowerPoint.

So far the only options I've found involve a sepearate camera, a seperate DVD player, and a recording program (like WinDVD or something) playing on THIS computer, everything somehow hooked to a firewire, and a full moon.

It seems to me that there should be SOMETHING out there that let's me watch this one-hour long interview on my Windows Media Player, stop it at...say...1:08 - hit record - let it play till 1:20 - then hit stop --- and let me have my clip saved somewhere.

Does anyone know of a simple program that does this? Or something I could buy? I know of a tool that captures VIDEO off a screen - but I need the audio too.

If you need more details, feel free to post or drop me a PM.

If you need to capture video and/or audio from streaming services (like youtube), you can use MediaConverter (www.mediaconverter.org).
to cut out pieces from video, you can use (at least if you're on Windows) Windows Movie Maker (which comes standard with XP/Vista). Not the best too, but hey, it's free!

In this case, the free-ness factor doesn't matter.

The problem with Windows MovieMaker is that you can only edit video that you CAPTURE. Meaning it has to come from a camera.

I already have a DVD (nothing copyrighted) that I need to take sections out of.

The files are IFO, BUP, VOB files. Moviemaker won't let me cut it down unless it's converted to a playable MovieMaker format, apparently.

...so a suitable converter for these types of files would also be very helpful.

Some information about what all those acronyms mean (I just learned, too): http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/how_to_play_vob___ifo___bup_files.cfm

That's not true, you can load avi's and wmv's too and edit them (I just did exactly that a few weeks ago when I had to cut out some parts out of our company's video clip after they laid off a few people)

[edit] ^ at least that's what I can do with WMM in Vista

You are quite correct -- in fact I am experimenting with a converter now that just might do the trick.

IN GENERAL though, I still think this would be a handy too to have. For general purposes as well as some baiting trophies Twisted Evil

Might be best to try save the file as a raw avi file. You can then drag and drop the avi into a tool like virtualdub: http://www.virtualdub.org/index.html

This enables you to easily cut out the bits you dont want, then save it as direct stream format (uncompressed avi). You then have a much smaller file to work with. Put the edited avi back into virtualdub then goto 'compression' and you should have a number of formats you can save it as (like divx / wmv etc). You can repeat this so you get the best quality/size suitable for the presentation.

This site may help http://www.videohelp.com/

This tool can also do loads of stuff and its free. have only used this for mp3 though: http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
