My lad told me her grandma died.

Now the age she tells me is somehow surprising, as I think that the average life-expectancy (is that the right word) in Nigeria shouldn't be that high.

She says that her grandma died at the age of 108, which even is a lot more than the average age people die at in "civilized countries" (sorry, got no better word at hand right now).

Anybody got any figures for the average age people die (naturally) over there?

Anyway, I won't call the lad on it but declare my deepest sympathies. After all, we're falling in love and planning a safari together (well, for the lad at least).

Well, if everything goes right this may become my first published bait, as this one is really developing nicely in the direction I want it to go.

You have to remember thought that those are only averages. There will be the odd few that manage to get higher than that but as for 108 I doubt it personally Very Happy

Infant mortality tends to be quite high in Africa, so keep in mind that if half the people die at birth and half live to be a hundred, the "average" is still 50. AARP has stats pulled based on life expectancy if the child lives past the crucial infant mortality threshold, and the average age for men and women is just over 70.

108 is very old, and lads lie, so I doubt it's true, but it's not as shocking as the average life expectancy would indicate.
