^Wrong thread parrot? ^
Anyway, I saw a news report earlier that said slavery is still widely practiced in west Africa. I didn't catch the full story, but a quick google says there is an estimated minimum of 43,000 slaves in Niger. I also see that Nigeria has its share of slaves. No decent estimates yet though.
An interesting nugget of info is that the Sokoto Caliphate - an Islamic community in Nigeria - apparently had more slaves than any other modern country except the USA.
I never liked the slave trade argument anyway. There are so many flaws that it's almost too easy. My favourite one to point out is that they have as much chance of being the descendant of a slave trader as I do of being one of a slave master. More so in fact, as my family tree is not full of well off people.

I have got over the Roman and French conquests of Britain and hold no lasting grudge. Nor do I perpetually blame all my misfortunes on the subjugation of our people and culture, and I can get on very happily with Germans and Japanese in spite of two World Wars in which I lost close relatives.
True, but I haven't forgiven the bloody vikings yet!
