I was sitting here the other day, not feeling at the top of my game, so I was flicking through the TV channels (its a bloke thing ) and I came across a channel called AIT Movistar. It seem to specialise in Nigerian films and the film showing was called The Mayors.
Brief synopsis: There are 2 men who refer to themselves as Mayor. One is a University Lecturer and the other an International Fraudster. They eventually meet when the lecturer is having his car washed and the guys suddenly stop to start washing the fraudsters car. He has an argument with them so the fraudster tracks him down and tries to recruit him into the scamming business. (Apparently this storyline continues in The Mayors 2).
Anyway you see the bad Mayor in his office taking a call from a victim and showing his deputy how to handle a victim. The deputy runs a cybercafe and a lot of the computers are taken up by the workers who are sending out the initial emails etc. They even have a hierarchy set up in the cafe.
When the 2 get together, the good Mayor asks the bad Mayor how he justifies committing this crime, to which the baddie responds that it depends on your own definition of crime. Goodie say the baddie is offering non-existent money to innocent victims.
Baddies answer is that what he is doing is selling GREED to people and therefore if they want to buy, it is of their own doing and they are the guilty party not him. He actually uses the term 419.
So, if you are bored or want a break from the computer, and you can find that channel, the film is worth a look see just to see a reasonable example of how these guys work. |

For those of you in the UK with Sky, it's channel 330.
Oh, and at 8:00am tomorrow:
Inheritance...

A compelling Nigerian series about a power tussle between a widow and her husband's relatives who try to inherit her husband's properties |
I have a bait that follows that exact story! |

I wonder if I could stand the movie without puking ... and it is not supposed to be satire? Hmmm. Yes. Sounds interesting. Maybe youtube gets parts of it soon. Possibly I can even understand the bad Mayor. The criminals are the more interesting movie characters, anyway...but then, the urge to puke might prevent me fron getting so far as to even understanding. |

I had that reaction when I saw GlenGarry Glen Ross. The portrayals of delusional, backstabbing salespeople were too real. It's why I left radio and now work freelance. One of the meanest characters has the same first and last name as my son. That made me queasy too.
Still this sounds like an interesting film - I wonder if it's available for purchase or rental (legally I mean) |
