A lot of them say "THIS IS NOT A SCAM" (usually in large letters, as if writing it bigger will make it sound more convincing), at least any more. Sort of a futile attempt to convince people they're legit, I think, now that more people know about 419 scams. |

The "this is not a scam" nonsense is very common, and has always been just another part of the scam.
As for the question of whether or not things are getting more difficult for various types of scams, the answer is always "yes" but this is just the nature of confidence crimes. As various types of fraud become better know, they become less effective. Since the scammers are continually having their methods become less effective, they are constantly trying to invent new scams, or improve old scams.
If you study the history of confidence crimes, you'll see an obvious trend; a scammer will keep improving a particular scam until it either no longer works, or until they invent a new type of scam.

Once in a while I send out a mass ASEM that says: "Why do you send joke emails to people?"
When they reply: "I assure you that this is no joke, this is a very serious matter!", I then tell them: "Your joke letters are my main source of daily amusement and entertainment, do send me more, I really do enjoy it".
Their skill at pretense is very dear to them, and that pretense is what I love to ridicule. |
