You might be able to use the repair function on the installation CD.
I had an old drive that did the same thing. I couldn't be bothered to restore it, i reformatted instead, you might need to do the same thing.
Where is the sensitive info saved? If it's in a document, then you could plug the hard drive into a different PC and copy it off. |

What exactly is the problem?
Does your system start at all? Both normal and save mode?
Uninstalled a program lately? Or cleaned out some files?
Did you take a look in the event log to see which file is missing?
If yes: have you tried searching the registry for this particular file name , and delete that entry yet? |

That is a bad thing. You could use a Linux live CD to recover and save your personal files, (I like this one, http://www.puppylinux.org/ ) then reinstall XP.
Then start saving an image of your HD. http://www.acronis.com/ is good if you have $. http://selfimage.excelcia.org/ is just as good, as well as open source and free. |

Glad you fixed it, while up and running, make a linux startup/live CD, will start your computer without windows and gives access to your files. Made it once and never used it, then my hard disk got corrupted (NTFS ata over two hard disks) and Ubuntu allowed me to fix it. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download |
