I got caught in a scam!!

I have just lost 2580 euro in scam.
I was selling a dinghy, they sent a fake draft for much more than the asking price so I had to send change. After I realised my mistake I get another email from some claiming to be from the "FBI" saying I had send him the draft and the money back!?!.
The buyer claimed to be in Germany and he had sold the dinghy on to someone else. Just before he was due to collect it, I get an email saying his father was ill and he needed money to pay for care.
The two of the have poor English, show in the grammar they use.
Below are the details:

"Peter Jackson" <[email protected]> "FBI" agent

I sent to money by Western Union to

Debby Smith at an address in south London and phone number of +447031918594

The buyer contacted me by phone too on

+2348023173625

The buyer still replies to my emails, when I ask about repaying "his money" but he claims no knowledge of a fake draft.

Anyhow... I don't know what can be done

Unfortunately very little can be done mate as scammers use aliases. I'm sorry to hear you were scammed but as it was via Western Union I'll bet the scammers are not where they said they were. The cash can be picked up any where. What you were scammed by is what we call an overpayment scam so you need to watch out for fake law enforcement agents contacting you to help get your money back, that too is a scam It is too dangerous for you to bait these guys as they have your real life details so cut contact with them now, but if you wanted to post the original emails with headers we may be able to find where these guys are and I'm sure a few people here would like to play with them.

The sad part is, not much can be done to get your money back. You can make a police report with your local authorities, but there is very little they can do.

If you have more information on this particular lad, you can post it here and others will take up the cause to frustrate him. As he may have some of your personal information I suggest you leave him be.

Do you have the header information from his emails, we can at least see where he's from, and if you have any banking details of this lad you can report his activities.

I know you want to reach through your PC and strangle the little prick. If only...

I'm afraid Rodus and NN are right, there's little you can do to any real practical end. Please ignore any emails that tell you that you can recover the money if you pay them a fee - it's another scam, and probably from the same lad who scammed you before. Evil or Very Mad

Please feel free to stick around, ask anything you like, and maybe try baiting a diferent lad to get some payback? Smile

Yes, its a Nigerian code.

I'm sure that +2348023173625 could become the Western Union West African Help desk for the next few days. Someone tell the Gomer Boyz.

If you Googe the first number you will find it has been used in other scams before:

Google Results For: +447031918594

It's a UK personal number that redirects to the scammers mobile phone, probably in Nigeria as the other number is a Nigerian mobile phone number.

Sending insulting emails to other scammers & including his phone number should get him some abuse in the near future, can anyone explain why they would get so upset when I call them Goat F*ckers? Twisted Evil

It won't help get the money back but the hassle this scum bag will get might just make up for it in a small way.

Sorry to hear your story, grs. I'm afraid I can only regurgitate what others have said and that is that pretty much nothing can be done to get your money back at this point.

The only thing I can add is to say, in future, don't send money to anyone over the internet unless it is an internationally well-known website.

You have friends here, grs. This is like an anonymous band of brothers.

@grs - very sorry about you money. Fortunately you realized you were being scammed.

Thanks you for being brave/mad/upset enough to come forward and admit your have been scammed. Many victims feel ashamed (they should) and don't speak up. The more victims who come forward, the more people know about these scum, and the harder it becomes for them to work their evil.

Also, by popping in here, you remind us (or at least me) that the baiting we do serves more than a recreational past time. There are real people behind these crimes. If we can waste the criminals time and money, I think we are doing some good.

I am in Dublin, Ireland. The draft was posted to me from somewhere in Dublin according to the postmark. I emails came from servers in California and Nigeria. After I realised what happened I tried to ring both numbers but all I got was an automated reply with an English accent say the numbers could not be connected.
I would be interested to know how you get on with these lads.
As they have my postal address I don't what to harrass them too much and I am keeping a WWI 4inch shell casing (a big lump of brass!) next to the hall door.

^^Just drop all contact with them, ignore their emails. Lads are used to being dropped and after a few pleading/manipulative emails they'll give up. Don't worry about them turning up on your doorstep.

The Californian IP you picked up is probably the Yahoo/GMail/Hotmail server. The Nigerian one is the one you're interested in.

If you're really seeking vengence, what you can do is contact them from another e-mail address. But then, there's always the risk - minimal as it may be - that the lad will compare IP addresses and still be lead to you.

But I doubt you need to worry about the lad. Now that you put his e-mail address on this website, about a hundred members are going to each set their hundred mugus after him.

It may be vigilantism, but it's the only justice you can hope for with 419ers.

If you really want to spread the word about these slimeballs, go over to our sister site, www.scamwarners.com, and post the details about your scam. The more places where you post the scammer's name, email address, phone number, and type of scam, the more chances that someone who Googles the details will learn that it's a scam.

Sounds like this lad is really going to have to retrospectively "work" to earn that money! i'm laughing my head off and it's not even me that was robbed.
Hmm, i intended to start baiting over the summer but never got around to it. Maybe i should start now i'm back at uni, vent all the fruadstradion and anger at the relentless disorganisation of this place on some lads.
