In the early 80's I commented at work that I felt sorry for all the children whose hippie parents named them 'sunshine, rainbow, moonbeam' etc.

Of course, since this was in Boulder, Colorado, several people responded 'what's wrong with Sunshine? My daughter is named sunshine?"

Snerd...My father had no middle name. He used to tell people that was due to him coming from a poor family, and his parents couldn't affford to give him one.

99% of the people didn't get it......

Very Happy

I am fascinated with names. i collect them.

When I was a kid, I found these two names in the local phone book which started my fascination:

Turalura Moskowitz
and
Tondelayo Teppefessor

Later in School, I knew a kid who's name was Eddie E. Edwards. Whenever anyone asked what middle E stood for, he always answered with a straight face: "Steven". I also went to school with a Candy Kane, Penny Nickle and a set of triplets named Rock, Clay and Sandy.

A few years back, my wife worked in a hospital in New Orleans and actually saw twins named:
Phonetically: Oh-RAN-Zhell-oh and Le-MAHN-Zhell-oh
Spelled: Orangejello and Lemonjello

As for celebrities, Rob Morrow (<i>Northern Exposure, Numb3rs</i>) named his kid Tu. Yeah...Tu Morrow.

Lastly, my grandson is named Attila. (Pronounced AT-ill-uh) I. Kid. You. Not. Attila. The boy's father is a 1st generation American from Hungarian Parents. I have since learned from MY Hungarian ancestry (My grandmother was Hungarian and my mother visits there a lot) that Attila is a very popular Hungarian name for boys... They call him either Koy (his middle name is Komer, from his great grandfather) or Tilly. Yeah... Tilly.
Ya think he'll have any problems growing up?

I have that book. It's hilarious. The section about the world's worst records made me howl with laughter!

There was a birth announcement in the local paper: they called their child something like 'Misty Peaches'. I knew a girl at university called Kryztal. Tacky name + illiterate parents. Double whammy.

Is Number 6 Bus Shelter where the poor child was conceived? Shocked

Why has no one mention the Zappa's kids yet? Moon Unit? Dweezil?

My sister-in-law named her son Dallas. I keep telling my husband we're going to name our kids after a city and state.
Boston Massachussets S.
New York City New York S.
etc, etc.

**edited to give a bit of clarity

@ Marvinator

As a genealogy librarian I get to see lots of unusual names. I think the funniest I ran across was the Fart family in east texas. Daddy and Mommy Fart named their kids Susiecan Fart, Moore Fart, Ida Fart and Lotta Fart. It was so hard to keep a straight face when I was helping this patron with their ancestral research.

I dated a man who named his children Calico, Strider and Seneca. At least Calico went by Callie. I swear the man was on drugs when he named his kids.

I once had a friend whose name was N. Virginia. I later saw a paper with the name "Nor Virginia" on it, and I asked her what the Nor meant. She was embarrassed for a moment and decided to tell me. She was born at the end of WWII to the Cuban wife of a Navy officer. At the Base Hospital where Ginnie was born, her mother - being slightly woozy from the anasthetic they used in those days, and not fluent in English - thought the nurse was asking where they lived instead of what she wanted to name the baby. Ginnie's dad being at sea, he wasn't there to correct the name of "Norfolk Virginia." They did manage to get the first name shortened, but decided Virginia was OK, so they just used that.

Another story:

These days, the name KITTY is not a big deal. I know several, in fact my sister is named Kitty. Back when we were growing up, everyone woudl ask her what her REAL name was, thinking that Kitty was short for something. The story goes that my mother decided to name her Kitty, using the nickname of our great aunt Kizandra. Mymother still loves to tell the story of when the woman came in to ask about the name for the new baby:

Mom: We'd like to name her Kitty.
idiot Woman: Is that Kathy with a K, or Cathy with a c?
Mom: It's Kitty, with a K.
Idiot woman: Is that Katherine with a K or Catherine witha C?
Mom: It's Kitty, with a K I T T Y.
Idiot woman still not grasping the situation: Is that Kathlene with a K, or Cathlene with a C?
Mom: (Deep breath) The name should be Kitty, K (pause) I (pause) T (pause) T (pause) Y. We are naming her after a very rich aunt.
Genius finally gets it: Oh Yes, Kitty, K I T T Y.

Just in case ... the car 'Mercedes' was named for the daughter of a business partner of Daimler and Benz, Mercédès Jellinek. I.e., the car was named after the girl, not the other way around.

Mercédès is a common Spanish name for a girl.

But then of course Spanish speakers also name their boys 'Jesus Christ' and 'Julius Ceasar.' A French name that doesn't raise any eyebrows is 'John the Baptist"

Lots of boys have 'Maria' as a middle name.

Paris is actually a boy's name. Maybe Miss Hilton is trying to compensate.

Had one gal her name was Porche... her daughter.... Lexous. Wonder if Lexous will have a daughter BMW or something.

And then we have 'Condoleeza'.............and luckily she is accomplished enough to rise above that tag.....

Very Happy

My family is/was mostly musicians, and my mother would often book jobs from home. Years ago, somebody called during dinner she couldn't quite understand...and needed some music for a wedding or something

She kept asking 'and what did you say your name is?"

Finally she asked 'and who is the bride, FAY WRAY?' and hung up....

The man on the phone name was something like 'Keane Conn' but my mother kept thinking he was saying 'King Kong' and trying to book a fancy wedding

HE calls back....very patient, turned out to be a very nice man, and very rich.........and was used to the misunderstandings..

Very Happy

Misty is actually the cousin of a friend of mine. She came to our office when she visited the family.

But there's the skier Pikabou Street.

In my class there were four sets of twins: Janice and Jalene, Jean and Joan, Joyce and Judy, and -- wait for it -- Martha and Ray.
