I was looking threw http://www.idealist.org/volunteer for some world volunteer programs, and one thing struck me as odd. Every single program I looked at had a very high fee to join and go places. Your basically paying them any were from $100 to $1000 a week go out and help ... That doesn't include airfare.
I than decided to go to a travel site for cheap vacations, and found the prices comparable to the volunteer programs ....
Something is defiantly odd. |

Many non profits host interns. It is cheaper than a hotel, you volunteer and help the organization, and your fees keep the organization alive. It's a common thing, now.
I think for anything less that USD2250 a week with room and board, an opportunity to band birds, work on an orphanage, school, farm or archeological site would be worth the money, if you wanted to really plug in and be a benefit.
Where are you considering traveling to? |

Abeche, Chad is a nice place for volunteer work. No, really, it is.
But, as others have said, it is very common for charities to require such fees. I had a friend that went to Jordan and SHE had to raise money to go there, which was odd, because you couldn't pay me enough to go over there. But, to each their own. I guess I am better at volunteering in places like Scotland, Bahamas, etc. |
