I'm trying to get a poxy contract for my mobile phone. It's only for twenty quids a month and can be canceled at the end of any month.

So they run a credit check, and I can get any. Why? because I've never had any credit so I'm considered a bad risk.

I phoned up the UK's biggest credit check company to find out what I can do about it. Their solution, buy more stuff on credit.... Rolling Eyes

What a bunch of numpties. Evil or Very Mad

Credit is a strange thing, I haven't embarked on it myself yet but I remember the strange tale of my housemate trying to get his overdraft extended. They told him he couldn't do it because of his credit rating. He got the same advice you did.

What it all boils down to is that he couldn't drum up any more debt until he'd drummed up some more debt. (cc and od with same bank). Stupid banks.

My bank have told me they won't even give me a proper debit card until i've been employed three months. I'm on a Solo atm. Maybe i'll wave my first paycheck in their face and threaten to move....

I'm in the same position mate, I haven't borrowed for many years.. I don't own a credit card, no store cards, no loans, no car payments... nothing. Which means, despite having a good salary and the same employer for 18 years, apparently I am a bad risk when it comes to lending, as I don't have a history of borrowing. Confused

If it's any help though, some companies set a lower score for credit than others.
I don't know if you tried O2... they gave me a contract and as I say, my history is non-existent. I pay 25 a month for 500 inclusive minutes and a thousand texts. It's a rolling one month contract, 30 days notice to cancel.

I have one credit card, I put stuff on it occasionally and pay it off every month. I have found this will get you in the good graces of credit reports. I had no credit until I started doing that.

This was for T-Mobile. Strangely I could get credit for O2 and Orange but they wanted a hefty deposit up front, so I told em' to stuff it.

On Saturday I'm going to walk up and down Oxford Street and try to buy all sorts of really expensive crap on credit deals.
The credit people will have so many applications coming in, they'll either give in and up my rating or ban me for life.

Yeah it's a weird situation, you have to have credit in order to get credit.
My eldest had the same problems last year when she wanted to get a card ( to use in emergencies abroad ).
In the end I put her on one of my cards.

I frequently get offers of loans, credit cards, store cards etc etc even though I dont want them but I'm considered a good credit risk Rolling Eyes
The stuff all goes on the fire.

If you are serious about that it's a bad idea. To many applications over a short period of time will damage your credit. I, of course, have no idea what constitutes 'to many' .

I have a master debit card from my bank that helps with my credit rating. And, I have a gas credit card that I pay off every month. It's sad that society won't honor those who don't go into debt. Perhaps someone out there could start a service that verify's those who aren't in debt to their eyeballs and give them a good credit rating.

p.s. I think there is something wrong when my debit card has "666" in the numbers. Plus when I got my new card my security code changed to "419". The devil runs amuck!

Good thinking, Oxford street is nothing but pickpockets and bucket shops these days. I'll hit Regent Street instead.

But seriously, the only advice I got apart from the silliness was to pay all my bills by direct debit. He had no idea how long it would take for me to get a higher score on the lendometer.

The days when money talked are coming to an end.

Yup, it's all plastic money now-a-days. What a crock of bull. I'll fess up to having gone a bit overboard when the economy was good. Cards are all closed now, and NEVER going back, if we can! But it is tough these days dealing without lenders and all their jargon. The water can get awfully deep awfully fast!

Actually, what will get you the best FICO rating is to have a revolving debt--to be on time with payments, yet NOT pay off the balance each month, will get you in their best graces. This is their favorite type of customer, because those are the type they make the most money off of in interest fees. When you are paying it off every month, they are not making money in interest so, in their eyes, you are essentially freeloading.

I am a student and have had to put some of my student expenses on the old plastic. Additionally I have other things that I pay (cable bill, etc) that also help credit rating. If you have a cell phone plan (not the pre-paid kind), this should help your credit score. If you make a car payment or mortgage payment, this will help your credit rating as well. Hell, when I was still paying on my gym membership, that also helped my score.

Since I started building my credit at a relatively young age (19), I can't imagine what type of nuisance it would be for those without established credit. In some ways, it's worse for them than for those with bad credit! It has to be such a pain in the ass because as others have said, so much relies on credit these days, just a fact of life.

When I as 18 I got a credit card that I just put my gas on. That's all I really used it for. Occasionally I used it for an online purchase. Nevertheless, I paid it off every month. That was the only credit card I had through college. I have never had a car payment and I have never paid interest on anything other than my home. This gave me a very good credit score. In fact, when I went to purchase a home, my credit was good enough that I did not have to provide proof of income. Kind of stupid if you ask me, but that was their deal.

I agree that it is very foolish that you have to put things on credit in order to get approved for such things.

With the problems financial institutions have at present you'd think they might have been able to work out that whether people are already in debt isn't the best test as to whether they can afford to pay more back. Crying or Very sad

About 8 years ago (before things started to go crazy) I tried to buy a flat (admittedly very badly located village in the middle of nowhere.) The flat was in ok condition and would get through a survey. The cost of it would have been less than twice my salary, it was perfectly situated to allow easy and only moderately expensive travel to my very very secure job by public transport, I had no debts, and I have been saving a good amount of money (more than the mortgage payment) each month in addition to meeting my other expenses that would have been ongoing. I could have paid a 25% deposit in order to get the mortgage, but I wanted to keep some money incase and didn't want to pay more than a 10% deposit.

By the time I'd been turned down by three people the flat was sold. Two said they would lend, but that I wasn't wanting to borrow enough - their minimum loan was £25k and the flat I was after was only £19.5k. Mad

I've always considered the banks as nothing more than compulsive gamblers who are able to access never ending, interest free loans, that can then skip off down to the bookies to play fast and loose with the money. Win or lose, it makes no difference, there's plenty more where that came from.

I only had one credit card that I paid off at the end of each month, got rid of it years ago in exchange for a debit card. No mortgage or loans.
Strangely I did manage to buy a computer five years ago on 12 months interest free credit, but paid off the full amount before the repayments were due. That counts against me too.
I did not want this option, but was pretty much forced into it by a salesman more interested in his loan commission than the actual sale. I think the loan agreement was from an overseas lender tied in with the computer company so it went through automatically.

The guy (sounded about 12 years old) from the credit check company actually said I was turned down because it would be like them betting on a racehorse with no previous form or known pedigree. If that's their attitude to lending, it's no wonder the world is heading for financial ruin.

This is what I use as I regard my mobile phone as an emergency communication device with my kids, not a life support machine that must be left ON and attended to the exclusion of all else 24/7 (supresses the urge to rant). However, I do pay for my top ups with a credit card so.......

O2 were kind to me too when I wanted a contract mobile a few years ago. T-Mobile caused no trouble at all last year when I upgraded to another phone. I'm on their £15/month plan and get £34 to use for calls and texts which is a pretty good deal.

I find it incredibly stupid that the only way to be considered credit worthy is to get in debt... So basically one gets punished for paying off the credit card in full each month. Remember the Egg story from a few months back when they dropped people who paid off their credit cards each month as Egg didn't make enough money from them? Sigh...
