Those Belgians can be bloody crazy. They already have a green perforated mat in many urinals that has a little goalpost at the rear. In front of it is a little plastic ball, and you're supposed to score a goal with your stream. What happened to ablutions being strictly functional?

Anyway, Doodlebug, I think it was a perfectly reasonable question. Tell your lad not to get so upset about it, this is the first time you have had a business partner in Abdijan and you were looking to discuss something less formal with him to really get to know him better. Tell him it's how all European / American businessmen do business these days, and just hint that he's showing his own backwardness by not knowing that. Just because the subject matter is a little odd, doesn't make you less serious.
Tell him you'll both laugh over it when you are sipping drinks at the conclusion of your business.
