It is nice to hear from a man as I am usually alone here at my corporate headquearters surrounded by men who are only interested in me because I own the company.

I shall try to answer you questions that you have asked.

First I can assure you that I am an honest person. Our conversations will be in strictest confidance. My, this is exciting isn't it?

Second, I am 30 years old. I own the company that my Father built up and left to my brother and I before he passed away. One criticism that you might get is that you've given him too much information right at the start. Look at his replies. They are, so far, just copied from his standard script. All he's had to do is notice that you are interested and then he pastes in the next bit of his prepared script---two-three minutes at most, if that. Whereas you probably spent a while typing your replies.

That's okay if you want to put that level effort in at an early stage, but consider that he's probably not really taking any of those details in yet. He'll skim through them, see a generally positive response, that you're willing to help, and skip past the intricate details. At this stage, he just doesn't care. The only thing he cares about is getting your character's money.

So...

What will probably happen a little later is if you keep him on the hook long enough, he'll run out of pre-written script and he'll start to encounter all the delays that you've put in his way. THEN he'll start to write his own replies and will start to take much more notice of the content of your emails. And, more than likely, you're going to have to repeat the details from the first few emails if they are important to any story or plot you want to build up.

Again, if you want to invest that sort of effort, then go for it! But it might be worth considering (for next time) keeping your first messages fairly short and with only a few details per email. Hold back with the particulars and spoonfeed them to him over the course of the next few weeks. This stretches the bait out longer (wasting the lad's time, among other effects) and means you still have some things up your sleeve for future delays, problems, obstacles, and so on.

In short: Let him use his whole pre-written script, and once he has to write the emails himself... then the fun can begin!

, now try to make him read it all and ask some nice questions about tax laws once the money hits foreign soil. Send him a nice family picture and ask a picture of him so you can see who you are dealing with in this important business. Just a bit of chit chat, enough that he has to read it with one or two questions you need the answer from. Just repeat the question if he might forget to answer them Wink

Friendly, carefully and a tad greedy, anything can be discussed and should be discussed lengthly to make sure that both parties are on the same road.

I just came to this site recently (yay me!) and I LOVE it. I started out by reading all of the letters archive. I have noticed people talking about "start out slow". However, almost ALL of Shivers first response letters start out with a lengthy reply.

So, why is it that all of the advice on the forumns say to start out with a general response?

Is it because Shiver is the man and I am a noob (which I know, I am Very Happy

)?

It just seems to me that his responses seemed to work for him, and those letters are what got me hooked Twisted Evil

The letters archive show the selected successful baits. What you don't see are the (no doubt) dozens and dozens of failed starts where a lengthy reply was simply ignored. It's a very biased selection of all the types of baiting that goes on, the collection of entertaining and crowd-pleasing baits in the letters archive. Which is good for attracting new people, but the downside is that new people expect they can do that with every lad they communicate with. Truth is... you'll get more result over the long-term with a "start slow" approach, and only occasional flashes of success with the other way.

But that's just me writing words and stuff. Try it yourself! You might strike lucky and get a real entertaining lad in the first week or so... might, but it's definitely not guaranteed. More likely, if you have high expectations of a Shiver-esque bait, the first month of baiting will be very disappointing for you.

You also might try picking a lad or three and reply from 4 or 5 different characters with different approaches. from a simple "OK. Tell me more" up to the full blown novella. Most of the time, you'll get the exact same reply to each.
