I lived for 6 1/2 years without a car after my DWI in 92 you adapt to life were you take mass transit or walk/bike very quickly. but I lived somewhere that had a exalent bus system. and it was only a 20 min bike ride to work. but a do not want to ever go back to that.

I don't really want to do without and I actually don't see why, an airplane with a catastrophic converter? A ship? My tractor, taking 300 gallons of diesel a day when seeding 16 hours for three weeks, what difference is my 600 kilometers a month going to make here. I fill up my personal truck almost 5 times a year, that's nothing. Now if they would shut down all military tanks in the world, practicing just in case of a war and make the deal like they did with the atom bombs, that would really help Wink

Edit And forbid all fire works, throwing tons of metals and sulphur in the air over a crowd in a city, that's irresponsible in my eyes. And while I'm at it racing cars or boats for fun (commercial time) is not very smart then too.

Concerning the subject of shopping ,here in Britain you can shop online for groceries and have them delivered .

For the record I am no eco warrior hell bent on saving the planet but just wondered if you could live without the car. I could but wouldn�t like to

A little tale:

I own a 10 year old Mercedes C200, a relatively small car, that I've had from new and drive infrequently. It has only 60,000 miles on the clock.
Two days ago the suspension collapsed.
It has a 30 year warranty.
Mercedes collected my car and delivered a courtesy car to my home address.

What have they loaned me (free of charge)
A Mercedes S-Class 500, almost new. 750 miles on the clock.
Cost GBP 78,000, USD 155,000. Shocked

The dealership repairing my car has five days to complete the job or pick up the hire charge for my courtesy car (which is covered for 5 days under the warranty).
I'll not be here for a few days because I'll be cruising and posing in my limo.

My other half is referring to the car as my temporary penis extension. Smile

Could I do without a car?
Maybe.
But not for the next day or two. Laughing

As I am self employed it would be very difficult to take 3 ladders 2 tool boxes 3 types of drills 2 large tubs of general tools glues and what ever else fits 3 draws of screws and fixings not to mention what ever it is I'm meant to be installing plus rolls of cable etc. - on the bus.

In short no.

But I did convert it to gas when I first got it so that helps on the hip pocket.

I live in Bumblefuck Nowhere.
No trains. No buses. No taxis.
Cycling is not an issue as the roads are mainly single track, up and down huge river valleys. The nearest amenity of any kind is well over an hour's walk away (probably 2 but I ain't attempted it). Walking is impossible anyway unless I want to become a red blot on the land-scape under the wheels of a tractor or a tourist's car.
The nearest proper town is over an hour's drive away. We used to have a local pub which had a lttle shop but after 300 years of trading, it closed down last summer due to Gordon Brown's No-Smoking rule and all the other red-tape bullshit he threw at the Licencing trade.
Because of the state of the roads and the isolation, I'm one of those people who actually does need a gas-guzzling 4 wheel drive.

I spend at least �150 per week on diesel and petrol.
But take my cars and I'll take your balls.
