Humph died yesterday aged 86. He was famous both for being a fine jazz musician (trumpet-player and composer) and also for being the witty and sparkling host of the BBC Radio comedy show, "I'm sorry, I haven't a clue". (Wiki link for Humph is here and for the show is here.) The late great Louis Armstrong described Humph as "that cat in England who swings his ass off."
Iwas fortunate to see him perform many times. With my ex, I used to go regularly to tapings of ISIHAC, and we also saw him play at a small jazz event in London with the incomparable Stacey Kent. I also saw what I think will have been his last public performance, at the live show of ISIHAC 2 weeks ago in Harrogate. He was on his usual superb form, and even played his trumpet for the encore. My sincere condolences go to his family and friends.
The BBC news obituary is here and they have a comments section open, currently running at 65 pages. I hope his family take some comfort from reading it and the other tributes, and knowing he was well-loved by his audiences. |

I wasn't aware until now of his jazz career, but he was great on I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. Sparkling dry wit, if that makes sense, and a joy to listen to. |

Sad news indeed.
I saw the tributes on the BBC news this morning. A multi-talented man. RIP. |
