Dating scam that made me find this site

I had never heard of Scambaiting until just a few days ago. I had however caught MSNBC's program "to catch and ID thief". I've been on single online sites for 3 years and never had anyone try to scam me. UNTIL a few days ago...lol He said his name was Larry McClain, originally from France, living in USA where he opened his business (import/export of expensive used cars and equipment). He told of all the countries he goes to for business. Told me both his parents had died, and his wife also. Made a list of his "likes", one of which was coaching his sons soccer team. This was my first warning as his profile stated he had no children. He was going to be going to France in a few days to finish up a business proposal. It was a very lengthy first email, along with three photos of a very nice looking older "male model" typer of gentleman, and at the bottom of his email, it showed he was using a free email site....and if the few mistakes I had already caught weren't enough... the email has this at the bottom: "http://mail.secureroot.com/ - free mailbox for hackers and geeks".....LOL I couldn't believe someone was going to try to scam me!

I did play along with him for a day, I asked why his photo files where name willieee and willy and will, he had the explanation that his middle name was William (LARRY WILLIAM MCCLAIN). Later on the one Aim conversation I had with him (where he blew kisses and kept professing his undying love!), I asked if his first name was really Lawrence (Larry being the short version), he said no, its LARRY SCOTT MCCLAIN... I thought to myself...ding ding ding we have a winner. I had now put together the hacker email site, the child his profile said he didnt have, and 2 different names. Oh and I forgot to mention he was very pushy about talking to me on the phone before he went on his trip.....a bit to pushy!

At this point .. I have to apologize.... I had never been to this site and I did exactly what I shouldn't have done Sad

I emailed him and told him I caught onto him, and mentioned the email site and the 2 names...and told him I've moved on. He emailed back from aim.com email (typing all in CAPS), and insisted I call him so he could explain, gave me some stupid excuse as to why he changed his email to aim.... he gave me an alternate email that he said was from his company, I googled the @name and I found a site tha had a review on it, and people where complaining about getting porn spam from it.

I'm sooooo sorry. I feel like I should be given a time out in the corner Sad

So I have all his emails, and profile name and photos he's used if they should be posted anywhere I'd be happy to post.

(looking for big enough corner to put myself in now - i was a bad pet owner!)

Not to worry. You are educating yourself and learning how to do it the correct way. Good for you not allowing yourself to be taken in. Don't sit in the corner. You can post the pictures here in this thread and also at romancescam.com

What redshoes said, it is all a learning curve, you cant start out knowing everything. Now here is the fun part, you can make a fake name sign up with gmail using the fake name and write him again acting like a victim. Make up a few excuses to stay on email instead of calls or yim, or set up a yim account with the fake name. Teach the bastard he messed with the wrong person Smile

If you want to check headers http://headertool.apelord.com/ is a great tool, you just copy the header and paste it into the box on that page.

Edit: with those two addresses though all you are going to get is AOL's ip address sadly. You need to convince him to use yahoo. Smile

Ok, one of them was from aim.com free email..does that mean that they IP Strip? or its it something on his computer that hides the ip? Sorry I am a noobie Rolling Eyes

AOL strips the IP from their emails, just like gmail.

Welcome Quisp! Don't worry about educating him when you didn't know you shouldn't be. You should pat yourself on the back for not getting sucked into the scammer's story, for noticing the inconsistencies. Good for you!

Which feels good, but at same time we all know he has hundreds if not thousands of alias to use, and is already set up somewhere scamming someone else Sad

I made it yesterday specifically for the site to match my new found Quisp nick name Smile

I've seen some great avatars on here thats were very creative Smile

So i let my fingers do the typing and found my old friend Quisp. I also love to play in photo software Smile

Hi Quisp and welcome,

You say you are a noob and know nothing about baiting, from what I can see your picking it up very quickly.

I take it you have already read our romance baiting sticky, you must have, you know too much to not have read it.

Glad to have you with us, there are more than enough lads to go around.

Playing different charactors is something I am sure you will quickly get used to.

Just write down a story line for yourself that combines about 10 of your friends, then have your charactor live a long way away from any of them.

Being single in your story line is not even all that important.

I give them virtually no detail about myself, I have gone for months in baits and still not told my occupation, age or country, even though they were coming to visit me,

Without sounding stuck up, I do take pride in that I have common sense (or at least I think I do lol). I'm semi-internet savy, as I'm a player moderator for a popular online RPG. I also set up my own forum similar to this for mature player of the RPG game I play. RPG scammer are a bit different the 419's, but they try to scam just the same. Smile

I'm really enjoying reading here and getting TONS of laughs!
