VANCOUVER - Police are seeing an increase in an e-mail hoax sent by a supposed hit-man hired to "assassinate" the recipient.
After asking whether that person wants to live or die, the sender demands a large sum of money in return for not carrying out the mission.
"It's pretty easy to see through, but it is an example of extortion", Quesnel RCMP Staff Sgt. Keith Hildebrand said yesterday.
A copy was given to the detachment by someone who received the hoax.
In the e-mail, the hitman explains he has been hired by a friend who "wants you dead by all means".
The hitman then demands $7,000.
PhoneBusters anti-fraud call centre encourages victims of fraud to go to www.phonebusters.com or call 1-888-495-8501.
