Greetings and salutations.

For a while now I've been interested in baiting those funloving folk who seek to get easy cash from me but I did not realize others were also into the sport.

Only weeks ago did I discover 419eater.

Tonight I decided to try a tactic that I personally have no experience in and I am curious to know if it is common practice among newbies here. So, I decided to register and find out.

My lad(?) sent me the usual 419 bit about having money that was needed to be sent somewhere. So I asked him to send me information to both my email address and to Interpol's fax number.

Welcome to Eater. We wouldn�t recommend you asking your scammer to fax interpol. There is nothing they can do with the information, so really all you are doing is briefly tying up their fax line.

Hi and welcome Uriko, you'll probably hear back from the lad, Interpol will probably just look at it and bin it with everything else,

Just to make sure, the email address you replied from, it is anonymous isn't it?

Sending emails to scammers can be very rewarding and while doing this you are wasting their time and they are not writing to a potential victim.

Take a look around, read up on the different areas of the site and find out a little about each area of the site, by doing this you will get an idea of what you would like to try first, it is all fun and it can do loads of good to your fellow non scamming man.

There are however things you should learn in order to keep you safe as well as not doing any inadvertant damage such as teaching a scammer or involving an ITP (innocent Third Party) Thats why we have stickies and you will hear many times that you should read them, so please do.

Welcome Uriko. As you read upon things here you'll see reference to the "Innocent Third Parties Rule" or "ITPR". While Interpol doesn't strictly fall into that category, the gist is that we don't involve unwilling participants into baits, whether directly (such as having a fax sent to them), or indirectly (e.g. using a picture of a private individual taken from an on-line photo album).

There are loads of ways to abuse lads and waste their times without having to bring in third parties. If you want to gang up on lads with other willing baiters, then by all means, have at it.

Welcome to Eater! You did read the stickies, no? There's a great mentor thread over in the baiting help section. You'll definately want to check that out.

Sending faxes to interpol is pointless, as others have said. First of all, they're unlikely to read it. If they do, there's not much they can do about it as they have no jurisdiction in the country the lad is mailing you from. Third, the lad will most likely twig at such a request and then you've really accomplished nothing anyway.

But the most important reason for not having him send his mails to interpol is this - it is likely a secretary, not a law enforcement agent, who will pick up the fax. S/he may not know what a 419 is if it bit her... and then you've successfully put the scammer in contact with an innocent third party.

There's a bit about those in the stickies, as well as baiting safely and all of that good stuff. You are baiting safely, no? Just making sure...

Welcome to eater. I've tried having them send only to my K7 fax number. I could send using my computer but could not receive email. It worked for only one fax. Your mileage may vary.

It did occur to me that perhaps Interpol might not share my idea of humor. Shortly after I tried the (never-to-be-repeated) tactic I had sent them a message via the information request form.

Sticky-reading is a sport I engage in before posting to a given forum. Letter-reading is what had gotten my attention in the first place about 419eater.

My thanks for the information. I had considered Interpol to probably not be an innocent third party, though now my understanding about their process has grown.

Where safety is a concern, I have a paranoid stance. My particular email address that is usually contacted by everything under the sun (because I stopped caring long ago who had it) has been in service since 1998, and it is a Yahoo address. I refuse to meet people who I can say with some certainty are decent people. Legitimate information about me is about as common as a legitimate offer to place millions of dollars in one's account from a total stranger. Those who know me online well know next to nothing in reality.

I think I have safety covered.

I would be surprised if you managed to pull up a profile on Uriko and nailed me, since I haven't really made any under that name or any name like it. Smile

I am still (between other activities) reading stickies, taking a somewhat relaxed stance on how to proceed. I think I drove off my lad with that fax stunt, but I got him back with another email address. Since he is among the standard lad who replies to people even though he didn't mail them in the first place, I think perhaps I'll be able to easily get his attention from a more secure account.

Per the sticky, and the above advice, I have started to generate some gmail accounts for sporting events. Thank you.
