I saw the documentary on Bulgaria's abandoned children (BBC Channel 4 - was on air in the UK several months ago) earlier this week, and the images are still spooking through my brain. It's about an orphanage where some children are dropped because they have a slight handicap, like blindness, cleft lip, or just for no apparent reason. I almost can't find the words to describe how bad the situation is there. Anyway, if you haven't seen this yet, go here: video
Warning - it's not a fun thing to look at, but you should see this.
Unbelievable that this still happens today. This was the only orphanage they were allowed to film at, so the others are probably even worse.
In the mean time, a campaign has started to try to improve the children's situation. Check it to see how you can help, and/or sign the petition.

I may be walking on thin ice here posting a sort-of-political thing, but I think in this case, where children are involved, I should be allowed to bend the rules a bit.

Wow....that's incredibly sad Sad

What's really frustrating is that many of these countries don't allow foreign adoptions, so children like this have no hope.

I am proud to say that my daughter is from Bulgaria. She came from an orphanage and needed heart surgery that was not available to her there. She also had a hearing loss and therefore had no language at the time of her adoption just before her fourth birthday.

Next week she will celebrate her 18th birthday. She has become a delightful young woman, although she still has three years of high school to finish after this one. She had a little slower start in life but she is a determined individual who will make a success of whatever she decides to do in life.

Now if I could only teach her how to open the dishwasher and put the dishes inside instead of leaving them in the sink, then I will have accomplished something. Laughing

HA! Let me know when you figure that out. I have a 19 year old who could use that skill too.
