Down here in the south we call everything Coke. It's just more convenient to say it that way. To me, soda sounds like something old people say. (Sorry old people Embarassed ) And it's not that anyone really cares what kind of soft drink we have. Since I don't like the words 'soda' and 'pop', I could spring for "highly carbonated, artificially and naturally sweetened beverage".

On comment with the original post, the two things that got me in trouble were asking someone for a ride and using the word fanny. I was quite pleased with the Irish phrase "having a bit of craic". That one is just funny to me.

I read mostly fantasy books.

A LOT of fantasy authors are British.

I've picked up quite a few Britishisms, including some that I don't realize are only spoken across the pond. I was absolutely shocked when someone told me that "daft" was only used in England.

I have to say this: you guys have seem pretty wacky colloquialisms Very Happy . My favorite is "Pull the other one, it's got bells on".

I can't speak for all Americans, but I personally cannot tell accents apart. So when I hear an obvious foreigner speaking English, the first place that comes to mind is England.

There doesn't have to be a reason.

That's great kubis, but can you tell the difference between a Portsmouth and a Southampton accent. (both southern) or is your knowledge of southern accents limited to a particular part of the globe? Smile

Okay if words were interchangeable like if milk was blood and blood was milk would we have "milk curdling screams"? We would have both a blood bath and a milk bath. For those of us who are Americans we would eat Blood Duds instead of Milk Duds. We would go bleed the cows instead of milk the cows. And, all those Brits would be saying "Milky Hell" instead of "Bloody Hell". My mind doth wonder.

@ Chain Yanker
We Scots use the word "daft" too, it's not just in England, parts of Wales and Ireland use it too
( sorry if thats milky pedantic )

At least one thing the Scots and English differ on is turnip ( aka neep ). We use it to mean "swede" they use it for the wee smaller vegetable.

In Scotland "Going the messages " means going shopping.

Does Durex really mean sellotape/ sticky tape in Oz?

Sorry. To us geographically challenged Americans, England=Great Britain=that foreign country somewhere in Europe that speaks English.
So let me get this straight- England is different from Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, but they're all Britain? Oh, and there's two Irelands, right? One that's part of GB and one that's its own country?

EDIT: I notice your profile says you live in Lancre. I thought that was in the Ramtops? Wink

ChainYanker, and anyone else who is geographically challenged:
Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales.
The United Kingdom is Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Easy really.

In South Dakota, they say: "Damn it's cold and boring here."

In North Dakota, they don't say anything as no one actually lives there.

I think I've lost some brain cells reading this post.

Straight out of High School I moved from the midwest USA to the Bronx, NY, in an entirely Jamaican neighborhood. For the first few weeks I couldn't understand anyone around me. 5 years later when I moved away, I was speaking, walking and acting just like my neighbors. Great people!

Just like Eater: A year and a half around you people - and among other things I say cheers to my mates when we go out drinking Pimms...

We in Aus do have sticky tape and Durex is a brand of condom.

We wear our thongs on our feet and we call each other mate becuase we cant remember each others names.

If we "go for a root" we are not looking for potatoes and if we were to do it "in the back of a ute" it generally means we are from the country.

Next time somebody is rooting around in the cupboard trying to find a Durex you can chuckle just as we do. Wink

Oh and yes, it is interesting to hear an American trying to do an Aussie accent, it always sounds so much more like a british accent, not that it sounds like that either.

Sorry, guess I'm slow but I still don't get the coke thing... All I can imagine are people ordering at restaurants in the (American) south like this:

So, what do you want to drink with that?
Coke.
What kind?
Dr. Pepper.
