I told a mate of mine about scam baiting ages ago and occasionally it has come up in conversation. A mutual friend of ours was telling him recently he had met this really nice girl on line Confused

She only lives just over an hours drive away and they where going to meet up very soon. She however worked for aus-care or some agency and had to duck of to - OMG can you guess ? Of course you can Wink

Not long after she needs to come home and the plane fare is more than she expected. It seems that my light hearted banter with a mate has paid of and saved another mate. The potential Vic is a little downhearted about the result however he is many weeks wages better off. (it would have hit him hard financially)
It was really great getting feedback about a scam that was thwarted.

Nice to know we make a difference.
I talk to a couple of mates about baiting and the different types of scams.
Ones very up to the play and is just having a good laugh at what they will try, the other did know about the classic 419 scams, but has learnt about cheque , love and the other misc scams, the pressure methods they try to use, etc...
With education comes knowledge, with knowledge comes enlightenment. And the best part is it's just mates talking that causes it. Smile

Damn good work harry.

I like to read about stuff like that. I used to say that vics are all stoopid for falling for such "obvious" scams, but I've since (thanks Lotta) seen the error of my ways. Scams are called "crimes of persuasion" for a dang good reason. For a scammer to NOT get their payout due to your intervention... that's a big old victory for the good guys!

If you've got a nice warm feeling right now, go ahead and enjoy it!

It's always a great feeling to help a friend like that. Here are some clips of a chat I had with one of my friends a few weeks back. It gave me a warm fuzzy feeling all that day.

FRIEND: so for instance if someone told me they were from texas .. and i feel he isn't .. is there a way to find out where his network is from ? i am just asking
ME: you need to check the email headers for the ip address. what's his email provider?

My neighbours got done for over $8,000 a few months back, I found out about 1 day too late what they were up to.

The only consolation for me is that I warned them that they will come back and ask for more money because of some problem and that this was just another way to get even more money out of them.

I was proven right a week later and I was able to stop a bad situation being worse.

I couldn't get the warm fuzzy feeling out of that one but I know I made some difference.

The Vic in this case has a segment on the local radio. I'm going to try to get him to have a talk about scammers on his slot.
