I will be expecting to hear from you that you have remit the money to him today by Western Union.

Can anyone please tell me what, if anything Western Union and the other money transfer operatives are doing in regard to these scams? Why are no warnings issued when such amounts of money are being transferred to places well known for 419 scams?

There are scam warning posters in Western Union offices, there are also warning leaflets, and I believe, warnings on the back of their forms.

There are also security/fraud warnings on their websites:

Western Union

MoneyGram

They do in small print on a separate folder Smile They get their commission and that's how they make a living, they provide the service only and don't want to be involved with the possible risks for paying users Smile
Like you ISP doesn't care if you get a virus on your computer, just pay him for the service.

Sorry, but I don't see what else the company needs to do. Should they grill their customers at the desk before sending the wire?

At some point people need to accept personal responsibility for their actions.

That's a bit extreme, yeah? Laughing

Tell me, do you run up to people smoking cigarrettes and tell them to stop? Or lurk outside bars proclaiming warnings about liver disease? How about telling that overweight person in the fast food restaurant to get a salad?

WU and other similar organizations have posted warnings. People choose to ignore them.

anzac, I am curious as to what you think would be a solution to the problem. If you were in charge for one day, what safeguards would you put in place?

Edit: typo

Yes, as long as I had a poster or leaflets available to him/her, which tells about the dangers of jumping off tall buildings, just so I'm covered for any liability Wink Very Happy

No, but if I own a bungee jumping company and someone agrees to jump (but decides to loosen the rope despite being warned not to) its the individual's fault.

At the end of the day, WU and MG provide a service which is no doubt useful to some people. The fact that some people abuse the service is just a sad fact of life, but it doesn't mean that the company doesn't do enough. They do as much as can be reasonably expected.

Seriously, Anzac, what do you expect WU to do? What further steps should they take? It's easy to point fingers and cry foul, but far more difficult to offer workable solutions.

Please show us where you have done this, Anzac.

Give us a copy of the bulletin you had posted in your local WU office, or the newspress discussing your meeting with your local LEO's.

Give us an example to follow, instead of telling us that we aren't doing enough.

@Anzac

I think you should make it your personal mission to get Western Union to stop transferring all this money to scammers. Force them to post huge signs warning victims, and insist that they also warn people personally when attempting these transfers.
That would certainly make a huge dent in the money scammers make each year. Very Happy

I think the information about consumer fraud is quite available.

Click

If people refuse to read and heed the posted warnings in the WU office and on the WU forms what makes you think they will take the same warning seriously from any other source?

Anzac,

I'm starting to think that you have no desire to bait, but rather to constantly post shite to rile the users up. What exactly are your intentions here at eater as my patience is starting to wear down?
